Thanks to JB, I'm now a Bob Marley fan.
After hearing and reading Jimmy Buffett trumpet the greatness of Bob Marley for so long, I finally decided to give the legendary dreadlocked rasta a try. And I'm glad I did. In the space of less than a month, Bob Marley and the Wailers have made their way into my top ten list of all time favorite musical artists. My favorite BM songs so far include "Three Little Birds", "Exodus", "Jamming" and the oh-so-energetic and fun "Punky Reggae Party".
Thanks, JB, for introducing me to BM.

I love Ziggy, Damian is a little tough for me though. Stephen is pretty good.sonofabeach wrote:I've branched off into all kinds of music because of Jimmy.

While I'm sure the music is great, this is yet another cheap repackaging of Marley's early material. Unfortunately he unknowingly signed away the rights to his music early on so anything that came out prior to he and the Wailers signing with Island Records is fair game. Anyone can reissue it and they have. Thankfully, there are now some authorized collections out there of these same recordings that go the extra mile as far as liner notes and remastering so you're not getting just another cheap knock off (like the other "tin" collections you find in the budget section of the big box stores). I highly recommend these box sets that gather together all of these early tracks (some never before heard) for the first time ever:JollyMon66 wrote:The "Forever" box set is pretty good as well - mine came in a nice tin box

As for Ziggy, I was interested in him at first but at that time he was dabbling heavily in bubblegum reggae with the Melody Makers. In the years since my interest has waned even more as he's proceeded to release watered down versions of reggae and some records devoid of reggae at all (thank you, Dave Matthews). Not that he owes anything to reggae but I feel that style suits him best. Much more to my liking is Stephen Marley, his music has much more of an edge to it.
One thing I find frustrating is some folks only go as far as Marley when discovering reggae. That's like getting into rock n' roll but going no further than Elvis or the Beatles. Yes, Marley was great and made tons of great music but he's not the only one. There's also Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer, Black Uhuru, Jimmy Cliff, Toots and the Maytals, Burning Spear, the Melodians, the Heptones, Third World, the Mighty Diamonds, the Itals and many, many more.
For those that have read Timothy White's Catch A Fire it's no secret that part of Marley's Rasta beliefs were to spread his seed far and wide, and he did. Speaking of which, did anyone catch this segment on Ziggy earlier this summer on CBS Sunday Morning?backstreets77 wrote:JollyMon66 wrote:Talking to some locals in Montego, quite a few said around 16. Re: Thanks to JB, I'm now a Bob Marley fan.
I've have not noticed Ziggy getting away from the reggae sound. Love is my Religion was a good album of his. He did release a children's album last year but I think it was still reggae sounding just not my bag. I think he sounds the most like his dad of all of the Marleys.Tiki Torches wrote: As for Ziggy, I was interested in him at first but at that time he was dabbling heavily in bubblegum reggae with the Melody Makers. I believe he has much more potential.
I know Damien Marley is kinda like rap reggae, not really a bad thing imo but I just was not into his "Jamrock" album.
I have not heard much from Stephen Marley other than "Traffic Jam".
I'll have to check him out.
For me it started with Bob Marley, then branching out into different forms of reggae.
I like the genre made famous by Sublime, with a little bit of rock and hip hop. There are tons of bands doing this style.
My favorite was Pepper but recently I've gotten into a reggae group from South Carolina of all places called "The Movement".
I stumbled onto their "Set Sail" album via amazon and it has sorta become my summer soundtrack. They do what I call "feel good" reggae music. Not too political or serious.

Sampled some of the 2 bands you mentioned. Definitely worth dedicating some more listening!sonofabeach wrote:

We have been really enjoying Mishka this summer. His music has lots of different sounds to me at times. Thought I'd post this clip for a starter. Seems appropriate for our times today. I ended up getting all his cd's and haven't been disappointed. As has been posted before but he is the "Mr Moon" from Chanson Pour Les Petits Enfants that Jimmy wrote.

It was my first look baby that's all it took

My nephew loves The Movement but I've only heard something like one song by them so far. They play around NC pretty frequently so I'm sure I'll see 'em live sometime.

After my trip to Columbia earlier this month I found out The Movement had played a gig there on a Saturday night. Can't believe I didn't get a chance to check it out.Tiki Torches wrote:My nephew loves The Movement but I've only heard something like one song by them so far.
