Should I jump on the crazy hurricane get ready bandwagon?
Should I go to the grocery store? Should I buy milk, bread, bottled water and tp?
Seriously, I have no hurricane prep which is foolish where I live. But we are never really under supplied here. I have some tuna, beans, etc. I have some candles but no flashlights with batteries in them. It wold take a heck of a storm for me to be unable to get to any store for days. And I have plenty of family who live inland. But there are three more storms after Earl out there right now.
Are you prepared for a disaster? What do you have besides beer? I have three college kids and so I rarely keep surplus beer in my house and my one son is going to be handing me over some money tonight for the tequila he drank.

Power went out for 8 hours Sunday. We had candles, headlamps, flashlights, batteries, Iphones
We always have a large supply of TP and paper towels. I try to keep a good supply of cat food as well.

Re: Should I jump on the crazy hurrican get ready bandwagon
I don't have to be prepared for much in VT until winter hits, and even then if it's one DAY without power it's a big deal and the roads are always plowed out enough to get to the grocery store. Having said that when winter comes I make sure I have flashlight, candles and oil for my oil lamps. I have a gas stove so at least I can always heat up soup or something.

Yikes! I would definitely not run out of cat food if I were you. Mine just look pathetic and sit by the food cupboard with a hopeful look on their face.

Ignore the warnings at your peril. GET CASH. If there's no power, there's no ATMs and you can't get supplies if stores can't take your cards.

Yes, cash is always a good thing when there is no power. Stocking up on things that won't spoil (beer, tequila, rita mix). If you don't have room in the basement, you can always use the basement if you have one. I just missed the forecast, but if you are scheduled to get lots of rain, I would put buckets under your gutters if you have any. That way you can collect the water and flush the toilet. And yes to batteries as well. If you have a flashlight with a battery that charges, then I would keep it plugged in until the storm hits.
Lastly, I would clean up the backyard from things that could easily fly. Not because they might fly away, but because high winds and something that isn't tied down could fly into a window or fly into somebody.

I would have already jumped with feet firmly planted. Minimum 3 days of water per person and animal (1 gal ea per day). 3 days of food. TP (screw milk it'll spoil). Money's a good idea - actually LOTS of money because if, God forbid, you get hit with a Cat 4 there will be price gouging just like with Katrina.

No, but we do have earthquakes...and now they've moved up that timetable on the "reasonably big one" on the San Andreas...so for us we always have to be prepared. We wouldn't starve, but water is something we can always use more of. The only problem is where to put it.Lightning Bolt wrote:Not being from the tropical regions that have to regularly contend with this stuff,

Dang, hate when I hit submit before I mean to.
I'm good with flashlights (heck, I travel with a mini mag lite...cuz you never know...). I have plenty of charcoal to use the grill for cooking. And cash is a definite...especially small bills. I try not to let my gas tank go below half, and try to keep chargeable things charged. Of course if the house collapses on me, all that will be for naught!

I wouldn't go overboard. I would probably get one extra item you normally have to buy and some cash just in case. However, if there is a mandatory evacuation, then you would have to go.
If you want an experience, go to a Jimmy Buffett concert.
Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.
Life is short, live long!!
I'd rather be a wiseass than a dumbass.

Re: Should I jump on the crazy hurricane get ready bandwagon?
Earl is not likely to be a big deal. But it's early and the storms are lining up. It doesn't usually hit us, I guess because Hatteras sticks out more, but it always can. The big thing I do is get gas because the main island gas stations get alot of water. I have plenty of propane, a grill and if the electric goes out a bunch of food that will need cooking. I tend to keep some cash on hand.
I secured my deck furniture and bikes and surfboards. I'm expecting tropical storm force winds and rain. But it could shift in a bit and we could get a bit more or less. The lifeguards will earn their pay for a couple of days. Son thinks they may close beaches on Friday depending on how it gets. And the town will be crowded for Labor Day. This is the kind of storm I like. Not really risky to property but fun to go up on the boards and watch pass by.

Re: Should I jump on the crazy hurricane get ready bandwagon?
We have only had one storm that we left for and on that we rode out and realized that if had gotten a bit worst we probably should have left. People who are a few years older then me remember one very bad one when most of the island was under water for a good long time and bridges were out. Many of them remember staying in the high dry houses in big groups for a few weeks.
haha. Somebody else who has had a Maine Coon. He is the most different and fun cat I've had. He really is more like a dog then a cat. No worries here, Tropical Storm Warning is now in effect, I don't know if you stayed for Gloria several years ago but this will be alot less than that. I was up in LBI at the time and stayed on the island, went surfing after it passed by, biggest waves I had ever surfed til I went to Costa Rica.
Fill up because the gas stations will be flooded, I actually get gas over at Wawa when I go to Shoprite in Mamora, I know wrong end of the island...lol Go up to the music pier mid day friday and check out the pure power of the ocean, it's really amazing
