Maybe I'm wrong but I don't think spellcheck would have picked it up because it was spelled correctly.

But then I went to pubic school.

They just needed to proof read the sign. Spell check would not have reported anything. I, personally, am horrible at proof reading. I try to do it but always miss something.

For the record, I don't know if proof read is one word or two.

It's one.

Sad thing it was proofread.   From http://www.southbendtribune.com/article ... 29951/1130
Responsibility for the spelling error has been claimed by the Blue Waters Group. The company does work for the city of South Bend's redevelopment commission to promote the city.

"I feel terrible. It's a mistake we made and we're guilty of it, and responsible for it. and we take full responsibility for the error," said Patrick Strickler, president of the Blue Waters Group.

"Four people looked at it, eyeballed it and didn't see the mistake, and those people all work for me,” Strickler explained. “We take responsibility for it. We simply blew it. We did not see the missing "L."
I used to get my hometown newspaper and proof it all the time. I'm thinking good proofreaders are hard to come by these days.

There are no proofreaders, at least not at our local paper. I know, I spoke at some length with the publisher about it one time.

All writers — whether they are news reporters, columnists, or sportswriters — do their own work on their own computerized workstations. They are expected to proof their own writing, but too many of them depend solely on spell-check, which as we know is not infallible. Their output then get sent to a composing editor, who sets up the page on *his* computer, then forwards the thing to a third computer that controls the presses. At that point, somehow, magic happens — I've never been in the room where the printing is actually done, of course — and the stuff comes out on newsprint, which is collated, folded, cut and trimmed, and baled ready to go to the distributors, and from there to your local paperboy.

Given this procedure, I can usually overlook the occasional misspelled word, although I still feel that someone who is earning their paycheck by writing the English language *should* know how to use said language properly. What really tees me off is when the composing editor, regardless of whether it's his own editing or a error sent along by the initial writer, puts together a page with a story that gets hacked off in mid-sentence.

I went to a focus group for a training program that was being developed by our company. The same word with the word "relations" after it was on one of the slides regarding the company's Public Relations.

The presenter was a young fellow. All of the audience were women.

There were several snickers and no one quite knew how to bring the mistake to the young man's attention.

Finally one brave lady raised her hand and said to him. You might want to look over slide 5 carefully before you finalize your presentation for the rest of the Admin assistants.

I think the fellow would have been grateful for a sinkhole to open up in the conference room so that he could disappear forever.

Part of the problem is that when you make a mistake in texting it's hard to remember where the "backspace" key is :)
(bad habit of mine is always going for the backspace key when making a mistake, but then I type about 80 words a minute :D )
