Should Buffett be in the R&R Hall of Fame?
The nominees are out, and it really seemed like a weak bunch (Bon Jovi, Neil Diamond, LL Cool J, Dr. John, Alice Cooper, Beastie Boys, and a few others). I'm guessing Bon Jovi and Neil Diamond are easily in, and while I love Dr. John and hope he gets in also, the rest to me are toss ups. The two not nominated that seemed to generate a lot of buzz were KISS and Rush. Rush should be in it, no question. KISS? Yeah, they earned it as well.
Got me thinking (and I know deep in these posts there are previous discussions on it), should Jimmy be in it?
My vote says Yes. Naturally, a big fan like all of you, but the Eagles are in it, as well as James Taylor. Jimmy's career is amazing. Ruppert Holmes had Pina Colada, and was out. Jimmy had Margaritaville, and look where he's at today. Rock is, without question, a big influence in his music (Kenny Chesny is heavy county with a beach sound infused in it, but Jimmy is more a soft rock with country and beach infused). And how many Parrotheads would flock to the Hall (in Ohio, a mecca of Parrtheads no less) who otherwise probably wouldn't bother? Just a side note, but yes, I think he belongs. Agree? Disagree? I'm curious to other thoughts.
And I still want Live by the Bay on DVD & cd format!!!

NO
I also think some of the people in the HOF don't belong their either.

Sure. Why not? If he wants to be in it. ---- > http://rockhall.com/visit-the-museum/plan/tickets/
Jimmy could even get a two-day pass (available through the Museum’s box office ... $33 for adults, $25 for seniors).
I was in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame once. I wasn't impressed.

The Hall has no credibility, Madonna is in it.
And to even consider a hack like Bon Jovi is ridiculous. Now that I've gotten that off my chest, as much of a fan as I am, I don't think Buffett belongs in the Hall. Longevity and a devoted, cult-like, fan base aren't enough, in my opinion. What rock musicians has he influenced? That's one of the criteria for getting in.

And "no" ... Jimmy Buffett is not included (Texas to New Orleans Gulf).
Also this ---> Mississippi Musicians Hall of Fame (Jimmy Buffett is inducted here ... under the category *Rock and Roll*)

Bon Jovi, I agree with. Who have they influenced? All they did was make the world safe for Mom metal. I understand LL Cool J's nomination but don't agree with it. Rap is an influence on Rock n' Roll just as R & B, Country, Reggae and other genres have been so it definitely needs to be acknowledged (and already has, with the induction of Grandmaster Flash and Run-DMC) but where do you draw the line? Although I'm not a fan, I certainly consider the Beastie Boys a huge influence on Rock n' Roll. Same for Neil Diamond, Dr. John and Alice Cooper. Alice pretty much single-handedly invented theatrical rock.cajunpirate wrote:The nominees are out, and it really seemed like a weak bunch (Bon Jovi, Neil Diamond, LL Cool J, Dr. John, Alice Cooper, Beastie Boys, and a few others). As for Buffett, he's received a lot of favorable press via Rolling Stone in recent years and their editor, Jann Wenner is undoubtably a fan so I'd say his chances are pretty good. Still, I don't really see him as a huge influence on Rock n' Roll.

Re: Should Buffett be in the R&R Hall of Fame?
If you look at the list of inductees already in the HOF Jimmy certainly belongs there.
That being said, I think about 1/2 the performers should be eliminated and Jimmy does not belong in a "Rock and Roll" HOF.

Re: Should Buffett be in the R&R Hall of Fame?
With the criteria being "the influence and significance of the artists’ contributions to the development and perpetuation of rock and roll" I really don't see where Buffett fits into the picture. If so, who is it in Rock n' Roll that he's influenced? Then again, I could say the same thing about Madonna. As for the other performers that have been inducted, I do find some questionable but for the most part, I'd say they've been right on track. They're never going to please everybody.STL Parrot wrote:If you look at the list of inductees already in the HOF Jimmy certainly belongs there.

An overwhelming amount of "no's." Very surprised, to say the least, but I wanted to hear what others thought. ABBA, Bee Gees, Grandmaster Flash...all in (but many of you did state that half of the members don't deserve to be there).

It's a museum right? I figure the more artists there the more entertaining it will be to visit. So with Jimmy I say yes.
He's influenced plenty of artists (and fans).

Yes, we'd have no problem if he was voted ito the HOF. Why not. He's had an incredible career. We think he deserves it.

Re: Should Buffett be in the R&R Hall of Fame?
Weighing in late — I would say no. I agree with a lot of other people; there are some highly deserving people in there, but there are many others who have no business being in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame without their having bought a ticket. The trouble is, rock is constantly evolving; compare rock in the early days (Elvis, the Beach Boys, the Beatles) and then follow it through the next 40 years — you had rock, hard rock, psychedelia, soft rock (think Captain and Tennille, Neil Diamond, Carpenters), disco, punk, grunge, electronica/techno, hip-hop/urban...... Someone who considers 'hair metal' to be the quintessential incarnation of rock is not likely to look favorably when Neil Diamond or Sonny and Cher are also said to be 'rock and roll'.
Secondly, when I hear Jimmy I'm not thinking rock-and-roll; I'm thinking sand and palm trees and beaches and tropical breezes and frosty boat drinks. Jimmy himself says it best in "Come Monday":
"I've got my Hush Puppies on; I guess I never was meant for glitter rock-and-roll."
Putting Jimmy into the R&R HOF would be forcing a square peg into a round hole. In my opinion, he would be a much better fit in a Country Music Hall of Fame somewhere than shoehorned into the HOF in Cleveland.
Now here's a thought too, just off the top of my head. You know what would really make Jimmy's reputation and cement his place in musical history? How about if he *were* nominated and selected for the R&R HOF — and then did a "Patton", like George C. Scott, and declined the 'honor'?

Why not? Herb Albert's in under the "lifetime achievement" category.
Basically JB could afford to build his OWN hall of fame.

Sales is a big considertion, unfortunately

I used to think yes, but now I think no. To get an idea of who influenced who and even the creation of country trop rock etc., go read an old "Buffett Scrapbook". Though not at all complimentary through and through, this book is quite objective about the Buffett thing. I know alot of you have this, but I'll bet most newbies don't.... check it out.

Re: Should Buffett be in the R&R Hall of Fame?
Sales isn't a consideration at all, nor is concert grosses. One of the main criteria for induction is influence. If sales figured into it you'd never have artists like the Velvet Underground (who sold very few records but were highly influential) being inducted.ccmatt wrote:Sales is a big considertion, unfortunatelyLIPH wrote:The Hall has no credibility, Madonna is in it.And to even consider a hack like Bon Jovi is ridiculous. While I'm not necessarily a fan of ABBA, the Bee Gees or Grandmaster Flash I believe they all belong in the Hall. In the case of the Bee Gees, many aren't aware of their early career (way before Saturday Night Fever) which is when they first truly made their mark. Rap has also been a huge influence on rock n' roll so I feel that Grandmaster Flash definitely belongs. R & B, Blues, Country, Bluegrass, Jazz and Reggae performers have all been recognized because all of those genres of music have had a profound influence on Rock n' Roll. To not acknowledge Rap would be doing that genre of music a tremendous disservice. I'm not even a fan of Rap myself but it has influenced Rock n' Roll (and vice versa) without a doubt.cajunpirate wrote:An overwhelming amount of "no's."
