Pencil Thin Mustache
I am slowly working my way through Jimmy's music on Jokelben. Tonight I've been listening to the July 4, 1986 show from Clarkston, MI. Before he sings PTM he talks about the fact that his mustache is gone and what happened. According to this story, one night an effort was made to make his mustache pencil thin like Boston Blackie's. But when he woke up in the morning and looked at it the effort had not quite worked out too well, so off came what was left. Have some of you long time PHs heard that before or is there another story floating around about why the mustache went? I'm still trying to catch up on all the Jimmy lore I have missed in the past 30 years.

I have an interview on tape somewhere and he was asked about it right after he removed it, I'll see if I can find it. I haven's looked at those old tapes in years, might be fun, have some appearances on Johnny Carson on there.

Looked through my video archives and I don't have any '86 clips. Have '85 and '87. In January of '87 on The Tonight Show (hosted by Shandling - singing If It All Falls Down and Take It Back), he had a mustache.

I never heard that story but I'll throw out an alternate theory - maybe he shaved it off because he got tired of it.
what I really mean . . . I wish you were here
Re: Pencil Thin Mustache
Maybe it was because there wasn't any Homemade Music on the radio and he was NO "video king."
I heard it happened right before that video when Jimmy was in HOT Water!!
$$$$ lots and lots of changes for Jimmy and Coral Reefer Band then.

Re: Pencil Thin Mustache
Kay, excellent question. I had never heard that pointed out. Makes you wonder if that concert had the right date and if Jimmy actually shaved off the 'stache and grew it back.

Re: Pencil Thin Mustache
Hot Water was the first album cover (yes 12" vinyl) that I remember buying with
a clean shaven (weird looking) guy on the cover that almost resembled Jimmy Buffett.
The Homemade Music video from that album revealed at exactly the 0:56 mark that he had shaved the 'stache.

Re: Pencil Thin Mustache
Well maybe he shaved it off and then grew it back and then shaved it off again. The concert I was listening to was on July 4, 1986. The 1986 may not be right but the July 4 is because he talks about it all the time. And Hot Water did not come out until 1988. Plenty of time to shave, grow back and shave again. IMHO he looks much better without it, but that is just my own very, very personal opinion.

Still looking, it was mentioned in an interview with Bryant Gumble, said it made him look younger.dnw wrote:Let us know what you find out, CNF!Crazy Navy Flyer wrote:I have an interview on tape somewhere and he was asked about it right after he removed it, I'll see if I can find it. Interesting looking back thru the old videos with Carson, Shandling, Arsenio Hall, also Whoopie, Letterman, etc. I may try to transfer the old tapes to DVD.

Re: Pencil Thin Mustache
I have this perpetual video collection project of anything (well, minus shaky drunken concert audience videos) of Jimmy. Realized long ago that there is no way it will all fit on one (or two or three....) DVD. So, it sits growing in size on disc each year. But I agree, it is fun to look back through for tidbits like this.Crazy Navy Flyer wrote:Interesting looking back thru the old videos with Carson, Shandling, Arsenio Hall, also Whoopie, Letterman, etc. I may try to transfer the old tapes to DVD.
Would be interesting to compare list of what we have.

Re: Pencil Thin Mustache
Maybe he was tired of being confused with 1970's p-o-r-n stars?

Re: Pencil Thin Mustache
That show you were listening to was from 1987 not 1986 which explains the discrepancy with the January 1987 Tonight Show appearance.rmissbrook wrote:I am slowly working my way through Jimmy's music on Jokelben.
