I should probably check out the X Men movies but I think as far as theatrical releases Thor is probably next on my list. Most folks haven't had very favorable things to say about the Hangover and Pirates sequels.sonofabeach wrote:We just saw X Men First Class. It was not really on my "to see" list but my wife loves X Men.
It was great....much better than I was thinking it would be. There's nothing after the credits this time.

I'd love to see more theatres employ a no texting/no cellphone usage policy. Reminds me of those that go to concerts just to chit-chat throughout the entire performance. By the way, the clip below is definitely NSFW.

That's my new pet peeve now at the movies. It's distracting when someone starts texting or updating their facebook status. The bright lights really stands out in a movie theater. Can't people go anywhere without being slaves to their phones?Tiki Torches wrote:I'd love to see more theatres employ a no texting/no cellphone usage policy. I'm sure I'm in the minority but before entering a concert venue or movie theatre I either shut my phone down completely or at least set it to vibrate. I have so many friends that stay glued to their phones constantly. I wonder what's so important on there that they'll even look during the middle of a face-to-face conversation. They seem to be clueless as to just how rude that is.sonofabeach wrote:That's my new pet peeve now at the movies. It's distracting when someone starts texting or updating their facebook status. I agree. I recently switched to a basic dumbphone with talking only. No texting, no internet, no contract.Tiki Torches wrote:I'm sure I'm in the minority but before entering a concert venue or movie theatre I either shut my phone down completely or at least set it to vibrate. Super 8 looks promising but I don't plan on fighting the opening night crowds tonight.sonofabeach wrote:back to movies, The Green Lantern is on my "to see" list now.

I really enjoyed this and from the looks of it, there will be a sequel. If you look closely, there's a nice shout out to the Drive-By Truckers in one scene via a poster for their The Big To-Do album.

Best to see it on an off night anyway. Theatres tonight will be full of nothing but texting, cellphone calling folks.maid memories wrote:I have been counting down the days to this. That's what I'm thinking. I may just put it off until I'm in Massachusetts on Thursday and can catch a show in the middle of a work day.Tiki Torches wrote:Best to see it on an off night anyway. I saw The Hangover 2 on dvd today (don't ask) and it was not as funny as part 1 but it was still entertaining.

but you could count on your hand how many plot devices were obvious derivatives of earlier Spielberg films.
oh,...and be sure to stay right on through the credits for an entertaining treat

Re: Last Film Watched?

The film tells the story of Margaret Humphreys, a social worker from Nottingham, UK who uncovered the scandal of "home children", a scheme of forcibly relocating poor children from the UK to Australia and Canada. Margaret reunites estranged families and brings worldwide attention to the cause. Deported children were promised oranges and sunshine but they got hard labour and life in institutions.
It was very well made, very moving and hard to watch at times.

Re: Last Film Watched?
I loved it. The kids were giving me flashes of a suped up Abrams-esque Goonies, but it was a great movie. It did a fantastic job of scaring the crap out of me through suspense rather than resulting to shock and gore. There were typical Spielburg themes, but there were Abrams consistencies in there, too.
I can't help it, I get a little excited whenever Bad Robot pops up on the screen.
Thankfully by waiting until Sunday night the theater was tolerably crowded and everybody was well behaved. Great night, great movie.

Caught this one because I wanted to find out about the X-Men series, and...oh, who am I kidding?!sonofabeach wrote:We just saw X Men First Class. It was not really on my "to see" list but my wife loves X Men.

Jennifer Lawrence is total babe city (even in the blue reptilian!)
....and movie was pretty OK too. Sure, it's quite a stretch of historical re-imagination, but main actors made it mostly enjoyable

Re: Last Film Watched?

I was put off from seeing this for so long because of the negative reviews I'd read of it. Turns out, the movie is actually pretty good (at least I thought so). I think the shortcomings the reviewers were referring to have more to do with the movie being based on Cherie Currie's Neon Angel novel than anything else, thus the focus on Cherie and Joan Jett over the other members of the band. That said, during the update at the end it seemed downright cruel to leave out the others. The only ones mentioned were Jett, Currie and manager Kim Fowley. Even though I kept up with The Runaways back in the 70s thanks to frequent coverage in the likes of Circus and Creem it wasn't until years later that I actually heard any of their music. In fact, I don't recall them getting any airplay in my area. Of course, when Joan Jett's solo career took off, "I Love Rock n' Roll" was nearly inescapable back in the early 80s so I'm much more familiar with her work than I am with anything by The Runaways. That said, my unfamiliarity with their work didn't get in the way of enjoying the movie at all. So many movies about rock n' roll tend to get it all wrong but that isn't the case at all here. Kirsten Stewart's portrayal of Joan Jett is uncanny. Dakota Fanning also does an excellent job of playing Cherie Currie but it's Stewart that steals the show.
