Saw this last night and thought it was pretty bad. The special effects and action sequences were in the pocket but some of the situations and dialogue just didn't fit. I realize it's hard to be realistic given the premise of the movie and a huge part of it is the suspension of disbelief but some scenes were laugh out loud bad and not in a good way.
I did not laugh out loud but I do have a couple of things that could have been better. A little less shaky camera and I'd like to have seen more of the enemy. I like the sense of unity for the Marines and how it was almost nonstop action. The aliens reminded me of the Chimera from the Resistance video games.
It is now my favorite alien invasion movie, dethroning Independence Day, which is not all realy that great anymore but there's not much competion out there, although War of the Worlds with Tom Cruise was pretty good imo.
I'm looking forward to Cowboys and Aliens and as much as it pains me to say this.....the new Transformers.
I never considered myself much of a sci-fi junkie but I guess I am.

I usually don't question movies. It's like the Bible or Star Wars, you just accept it. Nevertheless I have couple observations about Super 8.
Spoiler alert
How does one survive a head on collision and huge explosion with a massive train?
The truck was on the tracks heading head on but most damage was the the right side (see explosion).
The creature was so strong that it could have just busted out before the derailment. How did the alien rip the engines out of cars without so much as leaving a scratch on them or oil/fluids everwhere.
As for the abducted people hanging upside down. I guess they were supposed to be snacks for the alien's ride home but now I'm supposed to feel compassion for him because he has pretty eyes? I think we were supposed to connect with it at the end (ie E.T.)
And at the end, one second you see washing machines, microwaves etc and the next second its a perfectly shaped ship. The ending seemed rushed
That is all

You see the end coming from a mile away but a pretty good rom-com. Plenty of good looking ladies Jennifer Aniston, Nicole Kidman and Brooklyn Decker..... Nick Swardson is very funny in this also.
I recall the reviews for this being less than favorable but it really wasn't that bad. Aside from just a couple of scenes, I thought it was on a par with the other Spiderman movies.

I wanna see that. Every time I go to Red Box it's out so it's got to be good.

Exactly!!... all perfectly valid points...and why there was no way I could rate this summer popcorn-pleaser as 4-star
$#@&...only Vegas again?? Padres ...gotta start believin'!Bring on '14 Spring Training!
I forgot to mention that the other night in Super 8 my wife leaned forward and tapped a teenage girl on the shoulder and told her that the bright light from her texting was distracting her. The girl never texted during the movie again.

Last night there was all of five of us in the entire theatre so thankfully, texting and jibber-jabbering during the movie weren't an issue.
We just got back from The Green Lantern in 3D and thought it was pretty good. Not as great visually as Thor in 3d but still good. If you see it, don't forget to stay through the credits.

I use this movie (Barton Fink) as my Coen barometer, proving I do like artsy movies if they're well done. I mention this because the last two (I haven't seen True Grit yet) Coen movies I've seen were crap! To be fair, No Country For Old Men just had a crappy ending but A Serious Man was absolute garbage! I always feel I have to defend my artsy side because I do overwhelmingly prefer comedies and adore all the 80's car comedies like the Cannonball and Smokey.

I actually loved No Country For Old Men and True Grit. As for the former, yes, it did leave you guessing but to me, that's a huge part of the beauty of it. Far too many movies spell everything out for you which leaves no air of mystery, Barton Fink was no exception. I also thoroughly enjoyed the Coen brothers work in O Brother, Where Art Thou?, perhaps their best movie yet.
