Jerry Jeff Walker in Galveston New Year's Day

Post by springparrot »

Jerry Jeff is playing at the Grand Opera House New Year's day evening.
He plays the first Saturday of the new year at the Grand.
It looks like tickets are still available if anyone is interested.

Hope to see some of you there!

Are ya'll going to spend the night in Galveston?

Am coming down for Townes' Wake at the Old Quarter on Saturday ... if you're staying overnight, we could meet (not meat) ... :-)
Gentilly ... 42 years is a long time to wait .... a Northeast Texas woman can hope.

I remember being at the JJW show at the Grand right after Townes died. It was a touching show.

Y'all both enjoy Galveston. Wish we could be there!

Getting ready to leave for Galveston ... will be thinking of all of you who love the music of Townes Van Zandt. :-)

Kevin: I love that clip. When I saw Earle last summer, when he was touring behind TOWNES, he just got up on the stage and opened a vein ... you could feel the emotion and the reverence for his friend and mentor.

Molly: Can't tell you how good it was to see you and Larry again. It did my old soul good. Christopher thought ya'll were "way kewl."

The wake was amazing. We got there at 7 ... and it was almost SRO ... found two chairs at the front of the room and didn't leave until 12:30 ... am so glad I did it. Never got to meet (not meat) Wrecks, but he performed several times ...

Christopher did a good job, in spite of his cold.

Kevin: Hope you and Marie can come to Texas some Jan. 1 ... I think you would be in Townes heaven.

Molly: I am so glad I met you on BN ... can't imagine my life without your funny stories and your great friendship.

The New Year's Jerry Jeff was great as usual, but odd in a few ways.

I don't know how many shows I have seen, but this is the first one he did NOT start the show with
"Gettin' By"
(OK BUCKAROOS.....)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UxJoL_f0i_c
He did sing it later, but it was just a strange intro.
It seemed to take him a few songs to get into the show, but when he did---he was having fun!
And the band, Steve Samuel, Brad Fordham and Chris Gage were up for the show.
Chris seemed to really enjoying being on stage---he is a great guitarist!

JJ did mention he was thinking about having the Galveston show alittle later in the year---too close to NYE.
He does NOT enjoy having conversation with the audience and please never yell out a request.
For some reason, people think they can talk to JJ while in the middle of a show
He usually doesn't have a written set list and calls audibles, and if someone yells out a request....you can bet it won't be sung.

I posted a very few pics on fb....usually the Opera house will let you take pics without flash, but I guess things have changed.
The camera Nazi were busy that night.
http://www.facebook.com/album.php?id=16 ... &aid=86490
Every time a camera came out, the Opera people were there telling you to put it away NOW.

And here's Wrecks Bell about to do some Townes tunes ... notice the table in front ... performers were encouraged to take a swig of the vodka and chase it with the Orange Crush ... it was Townes' fave.

Took this one for you, Kev.
