From Garratt Wilken: "It is with great sadness that we report that our keyboard player, Jay Spell, lost his battle with cancer early Friday morning, December 31, 2010. Services are pending, will let you know when details are released. Please join us in keeping Jay's family in your thoughts and prayers."

Jay Spell, a blind keyboardist, was a member of the Coral Reefers in 1977 & 78. He was in a number of other bands as well including Canned Heat. I had the opportunity to meet him a couple years ago when he was playing wth Garratt Wilken and the Parrotheads. Garratt introduced us and we had a nice chat.

The pride of Spivey's Corner, NC. Never have figured out if Jay was still with Buffett at my first show circa the spring of '79 during the Apple Chill festival in Chapel Hill. In fact, it's funny that this particular concert (which also featured The Spinners and Nantucket) isn't officially documented anywhere online. Well, unless you want to count the Comments section of this site were a fellow concert goer recounts their memories of that show. I remember Buffett thanking The Spinners' choreography but had totally forgotten about the snafu one of The Spinners made upon taking the stage.
