Assuming he plays the majority of the games left this season he should be around 3,100 hits. He would need roughly 6 - 7 years to conservatively to approach 4,000. Jeter hasn't been put on the disabled list for 8 years and hasn't played defense for 9 + years :D so there is no reason to think he won't produce offensively for years to come. I would imagine a switch to DH or the OF is in his near future.

Yeah, Jeter is a regular DICK STUART when it comes to defense. (I'm sure your father remembers him).
Look, I love Derek Jeter as much as 99% of the snoots in the Northeast hate him, but there's no way he's going to even approach 4000 hits. He's 37 now, and whatever he's "on pace" for, ALL players slow down after they reach the unfortunate side of their 30's. (God, I can't believe I used that term). Only two players ever reached 4000 hits-Pete Rose, and the biggest, slimiest, dirtiest, bigoted, self-centered A$$HOLE to ever play the game. Jeter is nowhere close to the caliber of hitter those two guys are (lifetime batting average of .313, and, so far this year, is batting .256. Only two other players in recent times (Hank Aaron and Stan Musial) even reached 3600 hits. It would be great for baseball if he did, but, looking at this realistically, it just ain't gonna happen. Jason Varitek will be in the hall of fame before Jeter gets 4000 hits. (Allright, THAT may be a stretch, but you get where I'm coming from).
Fun fact: Paul Molitor is the only player to hit a triple for his 3,000th hit.
Yep. And Pete Rose's first hit was a triple, and so was his first hit AFTER he broke the record of the biggest, slimiest, dirtiest, bigoted, self-centered-A$$HOLE to ever play the game.
Ted Williams is the only H.O.F.er whose final at-bat (much less his final hit) was a H.R.
Fun fact # 2: Craig Biggio is the only player with 3,000 hits not in the Hall of Fame (Peter Rose doesn't count . . . although he should . . . and Rafael Palmerio, well, lets be serious - not gonna happen).

Biggio should be a first ballot Hall of Famer in my humble opinion. He is a top 5 player in the past 30 years. He played every position up the middle better then most and could hit and run. He didn't hide in the Outfield for his entire career and hit meaningless HRs like some.
Biggio SHOULD be a first ballot hall of famer, but, then again, so should've Ron Santo. The B.B.W.A.A. are a f'ing joke. If Biggio kisses their collective a$$es, he's got a shot. But if he maintains his class and integrity, he'll have to wait like all the others.

Jeter is basically signed through 2014. Conservative estimate would be him at 3,500 - 3,600 hits at that point (again, other then this ankle strain there is no reason to think he won't play atleast average baseball - 150 hits per season average minimum - over that span). That would be roughly 450 hits in addition to, roughly, the 100 or so he gets throughout the remainder of this season. I am sure you are aware that Jeter began playing great baseball at a very young age and, if you don't put him in Stan The Man's or Hammerin' Hanks' level then atleast recognize his gift of years that few other MLB's have been granted. 4,000 might be a stretch: but 3,600 I would say is a lock. My opinion is Jeter re-signs in 2014. Even if he hits around the Mendoza line playing part time ball for a few years in his 40's he will approach 4,000. Injuries aside, of course.

***** And by the way, I think that Jeter is the best position player of my lifetime. And I, as you well know, am a die hard Red Sox fan.

Looks like Derek Jeter won't be getting his 3000th hit at Wrigley Field this weekend. The Yankees put him on the disabled list today, he's out for at least 15 days..

This is why he won't get to 4,000 hits......older he gets , the body starts to breakdown.....unless he goes on the Barry Bonds diet!!!....i guess if his head grows we'll know

Look, I love Derek Jeter like Chicagoans love crooked Democratic politicians, and you know I always appreciate your views and input too (as I do of any OBJECTIVE baseball fan) and, okay, The incredible "Mr. J" may get close to 3500 hits, MAYBE even 3600, but, as much as I want to be wrong, there's no way the man will get to 4000. To have to kick it up a notch or two when you're pushing 40 (or when 40 is pulling YOU), requires physical agility beyond what most mortals are capable of. Not saying he's not in great physical shape now (albeit, his current injury), he obviously IS, but to MAINTAIN those physical demands after playing every day for nearly 20 years or more, sometimes in temperatures well into the 90's day after day after day, does take it's toll. Even on the best of men. Obviously I hope he's around for many more years, but if he were to hang it up today and never get another hit, play another game, etc. I think most OBJECTIVE baseball fans would say "Thanks for the memories and for your contributions to the game, Mr. J. All the best in your retirement."
Again, there is only ONE Pete Rose, only ONE Stan Musial, only ONE Henry Aaron, and only ONE Cal Ripken.

JETER-THE GREATEST POSITION PLAYER OF YOUR LIFETIME?
Well, I'd probably put him in my top 10, but of MY lifetime Brooks Robinson really had no equal.

Yeah, I know you're a hard core Red Sox fan, and that's great. (Even as a Yankee fan, I'm not ashamed to say two of my favorite players of all time were Dwight Evans and Mike Lowell).
People think I HATE the Red Sox. I actually don't. Just a few of their overly obnoxious fans. But it IS the northeast and, I suppose, they can't help that. I don't really cheer AGAINST them, unless, of course, they're ahead of the Yankees in the standings, or when they play against each other. (Which hasn't done me much good of late).

And yes, I'm sure Jason Varitek will get a few votes for the hall of fame-everybody does. I do agree with you about the process being screwed up. When players like Gil Hodges, Ron Santo, Jim Kaat, Keith Hernandez, Steve Garvey, Don Mattingly, et. al. do NOT get enshrined simply because they didn't kiss enough of the writer's a$$es, words defy the depth of what a joke the process is.
(And even though I KNOW it'll never happen-it CAN'T happen now because of the idiotic "rules"-deep down in my heart, I'd love for my favorite player of all time-ROGER MARIS-to be enshrined, but he never kissed much a$$ either, so it is what it is).

The Cubs have now won two games in a row.

The ticker tape parade begins at noon on Michigan Avenue.

Why is it the Sox can go on a 9 game win streak, but can't do squat against the Rays.

The same reason why the Yankees go on THREE eight game win streaks and don't do squat against the Red Sox. [smilie=huh-ani.gif]

The point being, My Hooters loving Mid West Republican Comrade, is Jeter doesn't have to be kicking it up a notch in his 40's to get to 4,000. Again, 150 hits on average over the remainder of his contract (which is below his norm) puts him between 3,500 - 3,600 hits. There is no reason to think that won't happen . . . unless he starts to get injured more (2 trips to the disabled list in the my past 8 years says he won't). At that point he can phone it in as a Right Fielder or DH (same thing, really . . . I mean they both sit around scratching their nuts for 99% of the game) . . . make millions of dollars to be loved and honored in New York City hitting .230 - .240 - getting 125 hits per season (playing part time if he chooses) and he will be at 4,000 around 43 - 44 years old. In other words, he just has to show up once his current contract ends . . .

(Jeter, Yount, Ivan Rodriguez, Pujols . . . 4 best position players of my lifetime. Ichiro is a distant 5th . . . and, yeah, I know he plays right field. Schmidt and Biggio follow.).

Yeah, I keep forgetting New York is the only place where mediocre players get paid millions of dollars.
Look, I'll buy the fact that he'll probably end up with 3500-3600 hits, but 4000? I don't think so, my Tarheel Hooters loving Republican Red Sox loving comrade.
I COULD be wrong, but I doubt it.
One time in 1985 I thought I was wrong, but I was mistaken.

OKAY-you got me started. Here is MY list (based on my OPINION of the best position players of my lifetime). (NOTE-opinion means I'm not necessarily right or wrong before some of the sports professors swoop down and de-nut me:
1B-Keith Hernandez/Steve Garvey
2B-Ryne Sandberg/Roberto Alomar
SS-Ozzie Smith/Luis Apparicio
3B-Brooks Robinson/Mike Schmidt
LF-Ted Williams/Frank Robinson
CF-Willie Mays/Mickey Mantle
RF-Roberto Clemente/Henry Aaron
C-Johnny Bench/Yogi Berra

And pitchers:
Bobby Shantz/Jim Kaat (best FIELDING pitchers)

And who told you I like HOOTERS?
