Because even when they were cellar-dwellers, the Devil Rays were a good team, if they were playing division leaders. Playing the Royals, or the Orioles, or Mariners tho.... it was anyone's guess what was going to happen.tigzoe wrote:Why is it the Sox can go on a 9 game win streak, but can't do squat against the Rays.

Also, I said the last active MAJOR league ballplayer. But yes, Rickey Henderson was playing minor league ball until just recently. And, if I recall correctly, LUIS TIANT was pitching in the Northern League (an independent league with no major league affiliations) until he was well into his 60's. Maybe the Cubs should sign him.LIPH wrote:Rickey's younger than the grumpy old men, he was born in 1958.

Just wondering if "major" counted for a player that was signed to a team and in there system.Wino you know wrote:Also, I said the last active MAJOR league ballplayer. Re: 2011 Major League Baseball
I didn't know San Diego also had a minor league team. Too bad Rickey couldn't hang around the majors for just a few more games. He was something like three home runs shy of 300.
I saw him play in 1993 when he was with Toronto at a game in Oakland. (This was before he was traded back to Oakland). He homered in that game.

I actually meant a player who was active on a major league team.Tequila Revenge wrote:Just wondering if "major" counted for a player that was signed to a team and in there system.
I think it's great that Rickey played professional ball until he was close to 50, but it's moot in my post because, as G.O.M. #2 said, he's younger than both of us.
Neither one of us.As for the grumpy old men; who's doing Sophia and who get's Ann?
They're both too old for Larry and they're both too young for me.

Well, that about does it. I'm off to Chicago for the Yankees/Cubs series where I WON'T be seeing Derek Jeter get his 3000th hit.

Re: 2011 Major League Baseball
Baseball cheaters can't hide from the laws of physics
http://yubanet.com/life/Baseball-cheate ... hysics.php
The physicists did find that a ball was less lively if kept under the controlled temperature and humidity of a humidor, as practiced by the Colorado Rockies starting in 2002. The Rockies, trying to compensate for the extra distance balls were flying in the high, dry and thin air of Denver, noticed a drop in offensive statistics like home runs and total runs per game.
The researchers took four dozen baseballs and stored them in environments with humidity ranging from 11 to 97 percent and temperatures as low as 35 F. Measuring their coefficient of restitution against bats, they found the colder, moister balls bounced less.
The researchers calculate that a humidity increase from 30 to 50 percent would take 14 feet off a 380 foot fly ball - enough to decrease the chances of a home run by 25 percent.

Blame my parents for moving, when I was 2, to a state who has a professional baseball team that plays in the "league" with the DH. Its almost been 40 years of the Designated Hitter (1973, right?). I don't really like it either but what are you gonna do?Tequila Revenge wrote:Bfan53again wrote:I bet the BoSox fans in Pittsburgh this weekend we fully expecting a sweep.......but not by the Bucs!Tequila Revenge wrote:How as it watching a real baseball gamedrunkpirate66 wrote:In Pittsburgh, PA for the Red Sox. I was just taking another shot at the DH.Imagine a baseball game where the manager really has to....well, manage late in the game.
And I fully realized that Pittsburgh is no longer a push over. Nor is the other PA baseball organization. Cliff Lee looked as good as 1999 Pedro last night.
the hit and run is as good as any religion around this time of year . . .
