MLB needs a salary cap! It's sad when a successful franchise can't afford to keep it's best young players, that they themselves developed, simply because of the financial disparity of the sport.

They Have a 1st baseman...so he won't be going to Boston.....and they didn't buy anything....all the moves except Crawford and Scutaro were trades or home grown players......Gonzo was a trade for 3 high prospects and was in the works the prior year....yes, they have the money.....but , they really don't spend all that much on free agents,,,high priced ones anyways

i agree with that.....but don't forget the big payroll teams are paying a luxery tax to the other teams...so they aren't hurting..they just don't choose to spend there money

I turned the game off when it was 7-0. MLB Network was showing the 9th inning of the Red Sox-Orioles game and when Papelbon struck out the first 2 batters I figured the game was over so I turned that off too. I missed all the fun.

Wasn't the Red Sox gag job, and the Braves too BTW, worse than the Mets in 2007? They only blew a 7 game lead, I think the Red Sox and the Braves both had bigger leads in the wild card races.

Red Sox had something like a 9 game lead on Sept. 1st, and I believe the Braves had an 8.5 game lead on Sept. 4th.

i was watching Dennis and Callahan ( WWEI in Boston ).....They are saying from sources that Francona will ask for his options not to be picked up.....hearing some of the other things that went on , pitchers drinking beer during the games they aren't pitching and Kevin Yukilias being a problem in the club house....i guess it has ran it's course with Francona in Boston....to bad , i don't think he is the problem...i don't know if the Sox choked or just quit.....there will be a lot of changes i think in the off season for them....Drew will be out , Lowerie ( to soft a player ) will be gone , Youkilias gone , Lackey Gone ( somehow ) , Varitec Gone , Wakefield Gone. Those poor Red Sox...how did the Rays manage to beat them out? And when I mentioned about buying a World Series...it's not just free agents but the ability to retain your own players.
The Yankees/Red Sox they are both the same but one franchise just happens to be far more successful at buying Championships than the other.
And to suggest that the luxury tax levels the playing field...pure hogwash.

All of those teams, and I'm sure several others, blew huge August & September leads, and in all instances, the manager and nearly all front-line players were back the following year.
(Same with the 2004 Yankees in the A.L.C.S. after having a 3 games to none lead over the Red Sox).

No, I don't cheer for the Red Sox, but, although it may be unrealistic to expect Varitek to come back, it would, I.M.O., be sad if the others weren't able to come back and try again. I really don't think any of them are washed up as players.
Me being as old as I am and being around for as long as I have been, I guess I'm just too much of a baseball purist. AHHH, for the good ol' days of baseball's truly golden era.

The Red Sox quit , plane and simple ....... no leaders on that team..... people can say what they want about the "IDIOTS" , but , they played hard and had each others back....is it the Red Sox fault they develope some pretty good talent and lock them up to long term contracts....other teams could do the same ....Tampa did it with Longoria.....you tell me a team like Baltimore couldn't spend money....they had a gold mine of a stadium when it 1st opened...they choose not to spend the money....and the luxury tax is suppose to be used to spend on players...not to put into there pocket.....blame the owners....winning brings fans ( except Chicago..they always draw)....fans bring in money ..also winning gets you better TV deals....maybe the owners should market themselves better instead of using losing as a tax write off.....money gives you a better team.....Boston plays in one of the smallest parks in Baseball and isn't in the top 3 or 4 markets ...New York , Chicago , LA , Miami and i believe Dallas are bigger
