Why doesn't jimmy play anywhere else in NY State

Post by ParrotheadRPB »

Hi everyone.I live in central NY and I just wonder why Jimmy doesn't play anywhere in NY except MSG and Jones Beach.Theres tons of great venues between Buffalo and Albany where he could play. MY wife and I love to travel and we love going to Great Woods to see him,(can't wait for this year either) . Plus we've been to Mohegan Sun and MSG. I don't know,I guess I was just wondering if anyone knows why he doesn't play in upstate NY anymore. I know he has a few times in the past.

Probably population density. The Man is getting old. I think he schedules his tour, mostly, knowing that there are people all over the country that want to see him, that will travel to see him, and will plan accordingly to do so on an annual basis. So he plays New England (but mostly just the Mansfield/Foxboro area . . . yes, Mohegan but places that have a Margaritaville are of a different context all together), he plays New York but keeps it to NYC and the area . . . he cuts across the mid west . . . does Texas . . . California . . . sometimes NC . . . Florida . . . a few changes here and there but mostly it is the same tour every year - long gone are the 5 show a night weeks . . . heck . . . long gone are the 5 show a month excursions.
the hit and run is as good as any religion around this time of year . . .

No it wouldn't.... Not any more.... Last year they proved that they are Serious about their "No Alcohol" rule. They checked coolers coming in and made people either dump out all their alcohol or turn around and leave. They had alcohol detectors that they were sticking in red cups to see if there was alcohol in there, then issuing tickets. Nope. Saratoga is no longer a good place for a concert that involves tailgating.............

You're kidding?! They really tested the drink cups? Even Merriweather Post at its worse wasn't that bad. Hope that trend doesn't spread.

Wow. They're not even that bad out here in the SF Bay Area, which is somewhat tailgate-surly.

I remember Saratoga (SPAC) from back in the 70s, when I lived in Schenectady. We had some excellent acts up at SPAC. After The Who overfilled the place to 35K people (ampitheater has 5K seats; lawn was rated for 5K more people), they started booking smaller bands. But in those days, you could get lawn seats for top-name bands for $2.50.

(I remember Harry Belafonte one night, calling out to the lawn, "Can you hear me back there in the sh*tty seats?")

I miss those days.

He played Saratoga in 1991. That tour was the year of my first ever Buffett show and I still have the concert T-Shirt I bought at Great Woods, I was 16 :-?. According to the cities listed on the shirt he played the following NE areas; Wantagh, Bristol, Mansfield and Saratoga.

I wish he would play Tanglewood, MA.

I've got a good friend with insider info from Bethel Woods (the original Woodstock site) and he says that BW has been trying for the last few years to get Jimmy to come play. According to my friend, Jimmy's people are requesting 105% of the gate. You've got to sell a lot of beer to make a profit on a show like that.

The Carrier Dome, albeit not the greatest venue for Jimmy, would be very convenient for me.

Thank you very much.

SPAC would be a great venue for a JB show but as Scarlet pointed out the alcohol nazis would be out in full force. I was at Tom Petty last year and saw many people being ticketed and arrested. Being this is my home court for concerts, I would love to see JB here but I don't think it is ever going to happen. The acoustics are great and it is a fantastic venue in a great area but being a state park facility (just like Jones Beach) they do go overboard with alcohol compliance up here.

My first show at SPAC was Fleetwood Mac on the Rumors tour and I have probably been to over a 100 shows there in my lifetime. I also remember the Who concert (didn't attend) and it was a total zoo. I believe the lawn could actually hold 15k-20k (cramped) but there were many more people than that out there for that concert. I want to say there was never a limit on how many lawn tickets were sold before that show.
When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading.

SPAC is only 3 hours from us....and we've been to shows there...but heard from people who went to see DMB last summer that the Liquor Nazi's had ruined it....Jimmy could give free tickets to SPAC and I wouldn't go....I refuse to give places like that any of my money.

Isn't that why he no longer plays the Garden State Arts Center, too? Venue management there is ridiculous, so different than when I was growing up.
