Japan Hit By 8.9 Magnitude Earthquake

Post by surfpirate »

Amazing images on TV right now.
Recorded and LIVE footage of a huge tsunami rolling over the coastline.
Hawaii and the entire Pacific region under tsunami warnings.

Prayers and Phin Power.

Pretty amazing stuff over there - 8 confirmed dead already. Not good. Tsunami warnings set for parts of NZ already starting early tomorrow morning. Lots of fin power for the people over there! Thankfully my buddy and former coaching partner are okay. Scary stuff!

8.9 on the Richter scale? That's frakkin' HUGE!!
By comparison, the 1989 San Francisco quake (a/k/a the Loma Prieta quake) was 6.9 on the scale, which means this one was 100X stronger.

some others:
Yellowstone area (1959) — 7.3
Charleston SC (1886) — also 7.3
New Madrid (MO) area (1812) — 7.7
San Francisco (1906) — 7.9
The "Good Friday" quake off Anchorage, Alaska (1964) was worse, at 9.2

That was the World Series quake, right?! Lots of Phin Power heading to Japan, NZ, and Hawaii (since they have a warning up right now as well).

Yep.

CNN had listed the 5 biggest earthquakes in the world, this one in Japan today was number 5.

Six foot tsunami expected in Hawaii. :( :( :( :(

Many, many prayers to my friends who live there and also to Mitch/The Five O'Clock Parrot and his wife, who are visiting.

OMG, I KNEW there was someone I "knew" in Hawaii right now! Hopefully they have lots of warning and can stay out of harms way. Not exactly the kind of excitement you look for on vacation! I just realized someone I know from Stowe just got to Hawaii as well. Phin power for both of them to be safe!

We have a client in Hawaii visiting her daughter. She is supposed to leave in about 3 weeks. Wish I knew exactly where she was.

Eight foot wave at Midway Island.

Mitch's FB says they're up high in the hotel in Maui and should be okay.

I have a number of friends at sea level..... :(

And actually, I was absolutely impressed by Hawaii's response to the tsunami last year. They did a great job of evacuation and hopefully it will be the same this time. It's the middle of the night there, though... :-?

I've got a student who teaches on a base in Japan. I hope she is ok. She just emailed this week to tell me how beautiful everything was getting with spring here. The cherry blossoms were due to open in a couple of weeks.

My aunt and uncle are on a cruise over in the region. I don't know exactly where they were yesterday. I've got to check with the folks and find out.

I remember that one. We were very concerned for you.

Heavens! Those pictures of Japan or terrifying. Those people racing along the highway trying to get ahead of the wave. What an awful feeling that must have been. Tons of phin power on the way to Japan and all the places in the path of the wave.
