The Buffett Video Thread

Post by Tiki Torches »

Anyone know what this is from? It appears to be professionally filmed. The only info included with the video is a Buffett bio via Wiki.

Gotta be circa '70s. That's a new one to me. Didn't have that one in my collection. Thanks for posting.

That guy certainly has a broad and deep YouTube video collection.

Thanks! I really liked this. Jimmy's mature voice, both speaking and singing is lower. Loved the tempo of the original song - and without all the "salt, salt, salt", etc. call outs that have been added over the years. [smilie=battingeyes.gif]

Great video find. I've heard that show. After Margaritaville charted Jimmy said "any tequila drinkers out there" during some New York shows...maybe Central Park. I'm away from computer, but maybe someone can listen to the 1977 or 1978 New York shows.

Never found the show, but during the shows in the 80s Jimmy always asked about tequila drinkers...

There is a logo across the screen that says RAGE...which is an Australian tv station. Reading, I don't think they were broadcasting until 1987 and the video is much older than that.

Hi All

I can't say where the video came from other than to add that it has been lifted from a video clip show on the Australian national broadcaster, a bit like the BBC in the UK.

So this would be an officially released clip from who ever the record label was or one they put together. Being a government broadcaster they take copyright and all that fairly seriously.

Is it possible that they filmed Jimmy's tour before last? (You know about 23 years ago?) Back in the day the ABC used to film all sorts of gigs as there weren't all that many video clips made.

The ABC's flagship music show back then was called "Countdown" so that might help in the search.

I used to have contacts at ABC Music so I will see if they are still around and see if they can remember anything from back then (I certainly can't).

OK I have turned up some other info.

It appears that Rage played that clip on Jan 23, 2010 at about 5.00am.

The label credit is the ABC, so it looks like it was filmed when Jimmy toured way back then. Oddly they spelt Buffett as Buffet, so I will expand the search on the misspelling.

Another thing that also makes me think it may be a Countdown/ABC production are the corny video effects. It wasn't recorded on the Countdown set or with the ABC's studio cameras, I think this was filmed (that is using film), but produced by the ABC team - the effects are way too familiar.

(Ahh this takes me back to when I was studying archaeology, except this ain't on micro-fiche)

Isn't it a great one, Debbie! I remember seeing that while I was away from home on my iphone...somewhere in LA. :D :D

I especially love the sounds of the guitars blending during this show...like during the music bridge. I also enjoy the lead guitarist's special touches after BLEW OUT MY FLIPFLOP!

I recognize Harry Dailey, but not the background vocalist. And is that MR. Utley with the full dark beard and mustache or is that Roget Bartlett playing guitar?

It has to be during 1976. Here are some photos from the Austin City Limits shows back in 1976 at Roger Bartlett's site.

Thanks for posting this. Very cool. Clearly, circa 1970s, the folk style of the song fitting into the era. Definitely more southern twang in JBs voice back then; at some point, that twang disappeared. There must be a story there.
