How would You be affected by a Goverment Shutdown?

Post by catsway »

I am a NAF employee for the United States Air Force. I was wondering how I and others may be affected if the Government shuts down this Friday? Forced leave or furloughs? Any news or thoughts my phriends?

We haven't heard a thing................figures.

From what I have read which may be false, all essential staff work without pay. So what's the point?

hopefully it won't happen or be too long. The company I work for has a lot of it's business with gov't contracts so you can guess what might happen if it goes too long...... :o

The term "essential staff" has always puzzled me. If some of the staff is non-essential, why do they still have jobs?

I wouldn't be.
If you want an experience, go to a Jimmy Buffett concert.

Essential as in "office staff vs medical staff" for an example. I work for the VA so if we are shut down then that would pose a problem. Office staff can just come back to a pile of work, be buried and then proceed to play catch up.

It was mentioned (and I don't remember this although I was working) that we didn't draw a paycheck for 1 month the last go around in 95.

Don't get me wrong, it's all ridiculous and just screws with the working class once again.

IIRC, in 95 the furlough was about 3 days. I was "essential" and was therefore doing the work of five people, the other four being "non-essential." We eventually got paid for those days but it took about a month. And you know why we got paid? Only because it would have cost more to do all the paperwork to document not paying us. I kid you not....

We'll look like fools in front of the entire world. We CLOSE the United States Government while we're fighting in 3 different countries? Are you F-IN KIDDING ME??

People who can't pass a budget shouldn't keep their jobs. Every single one of them should resign. This is ABSURD.

And furthermore..... Every single American will be affected by a government shutdown in some way. Services will be curtailed. National Parks and National Seashores will be closed. On and on and on.....

Why yes, I do feel very strongly about overpaid, self-important politicians who can't/won't do their effin' jobs.

Exactly. Take a look up here. Businesses keep leaving Massachusetts and the voters keep electing the same s h i t heads to office and they can't figure out why anyone would want to leave.

When we have a shutdown due to severe snow and ice conditions, which
were only about 2 times in the last 30+ years, essential staff includes
security and firemen. :pirate:

So, I read this morning that members of Congress AND THEIR STAFFS will continue to be paid while the rest of us get furloughed, potentially without pay (initially without pay but MAYBE we'll get paid later). ARE YOU EFFING KIDDING ME?????????????

We received guidance from our HRO. The shutdown would NOT affect NAF employees because our funding is not appropriated by Congress. That's a relief since we have two catered weddings at the Club this weekend. I'd hate to be the one who would have to call the bride on Friday and tell her that her wedding could not be held at the Club.

I'm pretty sure that would be classified a suicide mission.

that's ironic, I would consider the entire US Congress to be the least essential "workers" in the government. If they weren't in session plotting new ways to butt into our lives and spend money we don't have, we would all be better off!

Seems we go through this every year in California. Furloughs, IOU's, PR spin, finger pointing, "breaking" news reports and the only people that end up getting really hurt are the small business owners that serve government employees or have contracts with the government. The people that pay taxes. It's so old it's not even news anymore out here.

There's a White House meeting today to iron out some things about a new CR (continuing resolution). Meaning another week to draw things out. But the only change I noticed is that the military will probably get their CR ratified until September....which will bring us to the end of this fiscal year. And the good (? seriously) news is that they can then start work on the '12 budget.

We're waiting to find out if my husband will change jobs but, of course, won't know that until the budget is done. :-? So, we wait.........
