Sail On Harmon "Killer" Killebrew

Post by oph »

Twins legend, Hall of Famer Killebrew dies

A man who wielded significant power in Washington, D.C., in the 1950s and is generally recognized as the first player to admire the parabolic trajectories of self-launched baseballs has died. Harmon Killebrew, slugger supreme, Hall of Famer and civic treasure in the Twin Cities, has joined the great majority, among whom he will stand with distinction because of achievement, friendly persuasion, unusual name and "Killer" nickname.

Time to stop and watch one more sail out of the park.

Sail on.
Take me for what I am, a star newly emerging.
I accept the new found man, and I set the twilight reeling.

As a kid playing sandlot ball, he was one of the guys we all pretended to be as we stepped into the batters box... Frank "Hondo" Howard, and Yastremski were two others.

When I saw he passed it made me wonder...Do kids even play sandlot baseball anymore? I really mean that. I never see kids on a field playing a game that isnt structured by adults. A different era altogether.

Sail on Harmon....

Funny.....how the guys "back in the day" did have unique mannerisms that we enjoyed emulating.
Sandlot baseball :o .......it's TRAVEL league ball or nothing at all.

Learned 2 things about HK today:
1. He is the one that is swinging in the MLB insignia

2. He and his brother and Dad were playing ball in their yard when they were kids.
Mom yelled out, "You are ruining the grass"
Then his Dad replied, "We are raising boys here, not grass"...

Thought that was a great one, raising 2 boys now myself.

Sail on Mr. Killebrew. From one Twins fan, who always entered Metropolitan Stadium and looked for the marker, thank you for that, and other memories.

If you want an experience, go to a Jimmy Buffett concert.

Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.

Life is short, live long!!

I saw the other day that he had decided to end his treatment. I'm a little surprised he's gone already. The stars are my youth are starting to go.

Sail on, Mr. Killebrew.

OK, asked the hubby, but he didn't know any Killebrews from Montana or California. But they have to be kin because Harmon was from Idaho !
