Margaritaville
I was listening to the different live versions of Margaritaville that was being done as far back as 1976. Do you suppose that the original studio version included the "not so lost" verse and was edited out for release or was it just dropped for the recording? He did the verse before & after the release.
Does anybody know what the story was? I suppose it has been told a million times but I don't know.

"Reading departure signs in some big airport
Reminds me of the places I've been.
Visions of good times that brought
so much pleasure
makes me want to go back again."

Re: Margaritaville
I can see it being dropped. Doesn't quite fit with the rest of the song. I just wish he'd start doing it in concert with just an acoustic. The original has a certain melancholy air to it that the live versions don't convey.

I wish he'd drop the "salt, salt, salt" BS, it adds nothing to the song.

I'm betting the verse was never even recorded with the song. Jimmy has been known to stretch the truth.

It's a pretty good song. I bet it catches on, then the rent will never be a problem again.

Re: Margaritaville
Maybe the song was too long for radio play so it was edited. I don't know whether the single was released before the album or not.
Or somebody just didn't like songs that long....just like they didn't like the grandfather dying in The Captain and the Kid.

Re: Margaritaville
Having been a DJ at my college radio station I'm guessing that if the "lost verse" was part of the original song, it was deleted to keep the song to an acceptable play length for commercial radio.......conched wrote:Maybe the song was too long for radio play so it was edited. No wonder why JB shunned commercial radio......or was commercial radio the one who shunned JB??????

The story I heard was that fans in the audience added the "Salt" chant along with "Hang on, hang on, hang on"

Re: Margaritaville
I heard him say that it was cut due to the length of the song. Anyone who really knows me, knows that is my favorite verse and I go nuts when he does it. Of course it isn't quite as special since he seems to be adding it more often.

"we got any tequilla drinkers out there?"
That lost verse sounds like an 'after the fact' addition to me...that said I like it
and as to the "salt, salt..."
Whether we like it or not, Buffett shows have been as much about audience participation as the music since the mid-late 1980's....kind of like going to a "Rocky Horror" movie in a theatre
cheers!

Re: Margaritaville
Maybe it's time we *discovered* some new lost verses .....
Surfin' at sunrise,
Saltwater in my eyes
A surfpirate heart and the sea in my soul
(soul! soul! soul!)
Paddlin' my longboard thinking up new chords
Smellin' that seaspray
And I'll never grow old
See? It's easy ..... kinda like a Buffetty Haiku.

Re: Margaritaville
Couldn't agree more. The live abomination it has become is painful to listen to; it's turned into a party anthem. Alan Jackson's version on "Under The Influence" is much closer to home. I think it blows away how JB performs it live today.Staredge wrote: I just wish he'd start doing it in concert with just an acoustic.
