Cowboy Hats

Post by buffettbride »

My dad was a big cowboy hat wearer in his day. My stepmom just brought my sisters and me his collection of cowboy hats. Some of them I remember him wearing in my childhood, but some of them are brand-new, never worn, still with tags. I have no intention of selling them, but I would like to know if they hold any real value.

They are all Stetsons circa 1978 or so.

Where do I begin?

And my preliminary research there tells me that 1970's cowboy hat sales are not exactly a thriving industry.

They mean more to me on display in my house than they do anyway. There are two that are super special (there are 8 total). One is the hat he used to wear when he would take us skiing and it has all the pins from the places we skied attached. The other is one is in my favorite picture of my dad.

These hats date back to when my parents were married. They divorced when I was six, so all pre-1980.

Stetson hats are considered by many to be the Cadillac of cowboy hats. Are they in boxes? If not, be sure to store them on the crown, not on the brim. Storing on the brim will mess it up. Stetson contain a high amount of beaver fur in the felt which makes them waterproof plus the inside is also waterproof just in case you need to use it to give your horse or other animal water. As old as they are they may be considered antiques and their value would depend on their condition. Someone that deals in antique clothing may can help. Stetson is in Garland, TX and it used to be on Marion Rd. I'm sure they have a website with contact info. My daddy wore Stetsons as his dress, or go to church hat. They were not cheap hats even back in the 70's. Back then it was possible to spend sevrtal hundred dollars on one however if brushed and taken care of they would last for years.

On another note posting from your phone s*cks so excuse typos pls.

It depends on the style, material, etc.

If it is a "felt" hat the the more x's its has the better.

I have my grandpa's last hat hanging on a wall.

They are in boxes and on the crown. Other than the feather banding on one of them that needs to be adhered again, they are absolutely perfect.

I wish I still had my old Stetson. We all got one when we spent a week at a ranch when I was a little kid.

Most of them are 3x Beaver. A few are leather + felt, but I can't find how many x's.

There is a code when you wear hats....

Straw hats between Easter and Labor Day.

Felt hats bewteen Labor Day and Easter.

You can tell who the posers are by the hat they wear.
