Hopefully a recording will surface after the show.
Hey, Kevin. I hope so, too. And I'm hoping for a couple of surprise guests. :-)

FYI. I got an advance copy of THIS ONE'S FOR HIM. James McMurtry's cover of COLD DOG SOUP might just be the best cut I've heard all year. It's a perfect combination of Guy's lyrics, James' unique musicality and the ghost of Townes Van Zandt. I listened to it all day today ... amazing. I get paid to listen to music and this cut is as good as it gets. 8)
Yea!!! Happy for you...and you deserve all you get through your job...you do it so well!!!!

I'm a little jealous!!! But, I do have my tickets in hand already for Nov. 2. So happy about that.
We're going to have dinner, right?

I'm not sure about our logistics. I may be coming in that afternoon ... PM and let me know where you're staying.

Am listening to CDS right now. Whoever got McMurtry for this cover is genius.
We may stay at sister's above Austin or just come home. Dinner sounds like a good idea. Not familiar with location of the Long Theatre, but I'll scope out places to eat nearby.

Any ideas?

Ok, it is actually the Michael and Susan Dell Hall at the Long Center...seating 2,400. Looks like a great place.

There is a restaurant and bar right across the street called ZAX with a set menu for show nights.

They also have a happy hour menu with Pizza or Quesadillas.

So we have a choice really close by!

The friend who is coming with me has a friend who lives somewhere in the area. They're supposed to be looking for places, too. I'll get back with you.

Nancy ... I haven't heard from my friend ... she's on a "TTT," only I don't think the tacky part applies. Won't be back until the end of the month ... so ... why don't you go ahead and make reservations (if they take them) for us at Zax?

I think there will be 4 in my party ... DAB will hopefully be joining us ...

I'm so ready to be part of this celebration ... 8)

Talked with Verlon Tuesday ... he shared stories about the recording sessions for "This One's for Him."

I seriously believe this is going to be one of the most important records in recent Texas music history. Am so glad I have tickets to the show in Austin.

Finally have a day off to myself.

Have been listening to THIS ONE'S FOR HIM all day ... it just gets better and better with each pass. COLD DOG SOUP is still the standout for me, but I'm also loving MY FAVORITE PICTURE OF YOU (a new one he wrote for Jerry Jeff to close the compilation), Terry Allen's OLD FRIENDS, ALL THROUGH THROWIN' GOOD LOVE AFTER BAD by Verlon, Hayes Carll's WORRY B GONE, Kevin Welch's MAGDALENE and Shawn Colvin's ALL HE WANTS IS YOU.

There really isn't a bad cut on the 2 CDs. I'm going to have them in rotation for a long, long time.

Okay ....

Reservations made in my name (Mathews, not Parrothead  ) at Zax's (right across the street from the venue) for 5 ... they start dinner service at 6 ... pre fixe $30 appetizer, entree, desert - but we're not married to it. We can park and stay parked.

Am so looking forward to this show.

The Willie Nelson video is great ... but, I'm telling ya'll ... McMurtry's cover of COLD DOG SOUP will make you forget to breathe. They prolly won't do a video, but JM&J, they should! [smilie=battingeyes.gif]

I think he's brilliant. Love that he writes his own songs. I don't think he did one cover last night. He did bring up Townes ... which is good, but he didn't do anything but his own, rich, complicated, story-telling songs. I don't think anyone took a breath during "Lydia." He said it's his most requested song. 8)

It really is a beautiful song....and he sings it so well
Lydia was actually written by Austin singer/songwriter Karen Poston
