Tips for tailgating in hellish heat...

Post by ParrotheadCMC »

Okay I'll fully admit, I'm a wimp in heat. HTH I lived in Vegas for 3 years, I don't know, LOL. The forecast for Pine Knob is now 96 degrees. This is Michigan, so likely it's a nice HUMID 96 degrees. Of course I'm praying to the weather gods that in the usual Michigan fashion the weather will change to something more bearable, but all next week is the low to mid 90's. So I'm not holding out hope.

We were planning on attempting a decent tailgate this year. But the heat is scaring all of us. I was thinking of hauling a kiddie pool. But HTH do you haul water? I'm thinking the water would get warm fast, so I'm thinking Ice might be a smarter option? We'll have 2 SUV's and a few cars to haul stuff. We have a tarp/canopy too which might offer some shade but not holding out hope.

So you hot weather veterans.....please share your tips. We'd rather spend the day in the lot then held up in traffic later getting in.

I would dedicate one 1 cooler for bottled water on ice and maybe Gatorade or Lemonade. Staying hydrated is the key when in hellish heat. Watch what you pack for edibles as they will be prone to rapid spoilage in high heat. Tents and Canopies are always a good idea in the parking lot as are deck umbrellas. As for the pool and water I am not sure.

Bring some coconut water. It's better than gatorade!

Buy a two gallon yard sprayer, then some tubing. Poke pin holes in the tubing, not too many. Go slow as you add more holes. When you pump up the sprayer the pressure will keep spraying for a good 5-10 minutes. I've seen tubing 20' long and works great. Tie it to a canopy with some zip ties. Bring 10-15 gal. of water and use some of the water from your coolers and will be even better.
It keeps everybody sooooo much cooler.

A cooler full of just ice for cooling a body (or several) down - nothing else. Take washcloths and handtowels to dip in the water and place on your head, neck, shoulders.

Ice in a hat, while wearing of course.

Make sure you wear a cotton shirt beneath your wool uniform, and add a havelock to your kepi.

Ooops, wait, wrong board.... :o

Shade. Water. Gatorade. A little less alcohol.... (You can still have fun. Honest. And dehydration cramps are far from fun.)

Build a giant volcano and attach hoses inside which will spray water when it "erupts". Bring a small water truck for the water supply which should last the whole tailgate. Encourage women in t-shirts (for jell-o shots) to stand under it when it erupts. You will have the tailgate of your life and won't even notice the temperature. 8)
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Pinot Noir in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and screaming "WOO HOO"

I tailgated recently in similar weather. I took a fan which we plugged into a jump box to keep the air moving through the tent. We also had a cooler full of ice dedicated solely for feet (no pun intended). I've also put ice cubes down my shirt but they didn't last too long. One of my friends made a frozen watermelon dessert which was great on such a hot day.

Any thin flexible tubing should do. Just like when you add the holes you want thin tubing, but not too thin. You are also going to need a fitting to attach the hose onto the sprayer. The guys at the Home Dump should be able to get you what you need.
