Sooo I got a copy of the Blossom setlist after the show.....

Post by WVParrothead »

...... and there were some notable changes Jimmy made in the 2nd set. He was supposed to play 5:00 after Schoolboy Heart but apparently forgot. Southern Cross was scheduled after Fins but that was omitted too. The encores were slated to be BEG/Last Man Standing/He Went to Paris but instead we got 5:00/BEG/Lovely Cruise. Not sure if all of these changes are commonplace or not. I know he'll call an audible or have a senior moment but that's a fair amount of shuffling right there.

Not sure if this link will work but here's a pic of the setlist:

Any time he replaces Southern Cross is the right time for this listener.

Seriously, why are people so hung up about set lists?

For most performers they are a bit of a guide. They just lower the number of the "oh gee , what will we play now?" pauses.

As a gig goes on, most accomplished performers can judge the mood of the crowd, so they tweak the performance. You may need to keep the crowd buzzing, so you skip the ballad and put in a favourite, or it might all be getting a little raucous, so you bump the "rock anthem" and stick a slower song in.

Or you might just want to play something, so you do.

Most of the bands I have worked with over 30 years have written down the set list after the fact.

Maybe I don't get it. Remember this though:

Maybe it has a bit to do with which guitars that many players might need and how they should be tuned???

As a guitar tech (well instrument tech I've worked on all manner of instruments) it helps to know what is coming, but again you don't get too hung up.

If you need to a tech to re-tune after each song then you really need to have a look at the set up of the guitar (and possibly your heavy handed playing style).

It appears the Jimmy and the band have regular tech's and roadies, so they should have an idea of what song needs what instrument, if not the guitarist just has to call out "I need the Gibson" and like magic the tech will appear with the axe in question.

Part of the fun for some is trying to figure what the setlist will be and all that. It probably doesn't translate well in the gap between annual visits from Jimmy and visits every 20 years

For me, don't know that I'm particularly hung up about the set list but I do find it interesting when JB calls audibles because these days his setlists aren't just a guide; they're pretty much in stone because the teleprompter is running, too. So when he changes it up it's either because he inadvertently skipped something or he made a deliberate change.

So after 30 something years in and out of the music industry I must admit I have never heard the term "calling audibles".

So I gather this is an unexpected change of plan, but where does it come from?

An American Football term perhaps?

Yep. Quarterback comes out, checks the playlist on his wrist, sees that the defensive setup won't let it work, calls an alternate play on the field.

There is also the lighting and back drop video. For example if the 'School boy Heart' video was 'damaged' it would be hard to roll with that and it could cause a needed change in the setlist. Buffett lighting is not as particular but for many staged groups light sequences are planned out well in advance (w/ video) so they must stick with the set list.

As someone else mentioned there are many bands (Phish, the Dead) who would just go with it... They would rehearse about 200 songs before the tour and pulled out whatever they were in the mood for. The Phish lighting director has often been called a member of the band since their lighting is insane and requires the director without a set list to literally, play the lighting, with the band.

Check out some you tube of them to get a feel for his mastery.

With a family history of Alzheimer's I don't understand why people give him a ration of chit for using a teleprompter or having senior moments or writing down a potential set list.

A set list isn't set in stone, it's more of a guide. :wench:

Just for the record, nowhere did I say that I criticized the setlist or was upset at what he played. Just thought it was interesting at the number of changes made in 2nd set. I would hate for this topic to turn into one of THOSE discussions...

It's not a teleprompter. He is watching CNBC.
