Jimmy's old Key West House question...

Post by parrotheadRodney »

Hi everyone,
I have a quick question. I was at a big art festival in Royal Oak, Michigan a couple weeks ago and came to a vendor selling a lot of beach/Buffett themed pictures. He's from the Tampa area. Anyway, I bought I picture from him which he said was Jimmy's old house in Key West. I've attached a picture and I want to know if anyone has any information about it. I tried Yahooing it, but found nothing.

I was just wondering where the house is, when Jimmy lived there, things like that.

Thanks for your help!!

Fins Up!

I don't know anything about that being Jimmy's old house, but that print is often seen at arts and crafts festivals.

My totally uninformed opinion calls BS on this one. I just somehow doubt there would have been a sign like that back when Jimmy was still living in those kinds of digs - he wasn't popular enough at that point for that sign to mean anything. The only house of his I know of is the one next door to Louie's and this looks NOTHING like that. In fact, it doesn't even really have a Key West look about it.

*EDIT* I take it back, found this online, I forgot about the balcony so it COULD be this building. However, I still have my doubts about the sign, maybe it was put up by the hammock shop. The angle is strange too but I suppose there COULD be some truth to it.

I say google map the address and pan around to see if that looks like the side of his house. Depending on when the picture was taken and how popular he was, I can imagine there was a sign at some point. Regardless both pics put a smile on my face.

According to what I have learned, Jimmy's original residence in KW is now Captain's Corner Dive Shop.

Just as a matter of interest, Lazy Jake's Hammock Shop is mentioned in here:

That's what I was told on the "Trails of Margaritaville" tour 6 years ago, but that is the first house he owned! That's not a picture of the shop and the "margaritaville. . ask Jimmy" is photo shopped in, check out the color. . .doesn't come close to matching! Same with the Key West FLA sign.

I don't care what anyone else says, I would have loved to have known someone like Nancy Drew — or the (original) Hardy Boys, for that matter.

And like daaave said, nice rework job on the jacket illustration, SP.

Hard to tell from the photo. I lived in KW from 72 -75 and that pic doesn't look like how I remember the place. Of course the sign wasn't there since M'ville wasn't released until after I left. I google maped the old address I have and that poster doesn't look like what I've found. Then again, he's had several different addresses in KW.

An excerpt from the book .......

Nancy's heart raced. "Could this be what I have been looking for?" she thought to herself as she pried up the old loose floorboard in the kitchen. Shining her flashlight into the open floor she spotted a yellowed paper tucked deep in the back. Dust fell from the aged document which she carefully unfolded and began to read the handwritten words ..... Fausto's: beer (case), sardines, peanut butter, chocolate milk, rolling papers .... "Why it's a grocery list!" she exclaimed out loud, "but who's?". Nancy started to replace the floorboard when she noticed another yellow scrap of paper. In her excitement she almost missed it. It was a legal document, a receipt folded neatly in a small envelope. Nancy carefully opened the receipt and read the typewritten words 'received $100 payment for 1953 Chevrolet pickup (blue), May 25, 1971, 316 Simonton St., Key West, ph. 295-6246'. The rest of the receipt was badly weathered. "Well that's no help" she thought. She folded the receipt and began to place it back into the envelope when she noticed that it was addressed to a J. Buffett and was mailed from a return address 'Monroe County Glass & Mirror Company'.
