Education vs. Occupation

Post by bravedave »

I posted this on FB, but I don't get a lot of hits there, so I'm adding it here too.

"Does your current occupation stem directly from your education?
I.e., if you work as an artist, did you study art?"

I studied Business and Finance, and haven't really used it yet.

I voted no, because there is no direct connection, but stereotypically the answer should be yes. Don't most out of work actors end up in the restaurant business? [smilie=sillyjester.gif] [smilie=sillyjester.gif] [smilie=sillyjester.gif] [smilie=sillyjester.gif]

Yup. Degree in M.I.S. and that's what I've been doing for the past 28 years.

Strange, especially considering the effect FB has had on email lists and message boards such as this. Most of the ones I belong to (with very few exceptions) have all come to a screeching halt.

BS in Psychology - I had NO idea what I wanted to do when I went to college. I pretty much just went because that's what you DID then, I should have done what one of my friends did and take a year to be in the workforce to see what was interesting. Looking back it seems that there were much more limited options than there are now. There are lots of things I'd be interested in now that weren't even JOBS back then! But banking has paid the bills for a long time so that's where I am!

For the record, I hate FB, I really do, you have no choice but to look through all the gazillion posts to find something you MIGHT be interested in reading. At least on a message board you can pick and choose your topic. I don't CARE if someone is having a sandwich at Arby's right now or painting their toenails or any one of a dozen other mindless things that come up. I guess I'm too old to appreciate it.

Not many people i know are doing what they go to school for..or had a clue what they wanted to do...unless a Dr or engineer......does college really prepare you for life's ups and downs....does it tell u how successful u are or can be....i know a ton of people that are doing very well for themselves without a college education.

Yes and no, so I said other. I have a law degree and I'm a lawyer but I don't have a job right now. I didn't major in "unemployed" so my current occupation doesn't match my education.

Before I went to law school I worked in banking for 11 years and I have an MBA in finance so my former occupation matched my earlier education.

Back in the stone age, unless you wanted to be a teacher or a nurse it seems a lot of women went to school for "Liberal Arts" which prepares you for nothing. I had a big interest in things like archeology and astronomy but there weren't very clear career paths for those things, especially for women - OR I was too lazy to look into it. In either case I don't think either of those would have had a big labor market either.

I am somewhat conflicted on that point. I went to school knowing I wanted to be an engineer/computer guy. Almost all the classes I took were in preparation for that. I had little opportunity to take classes outside my major. So, I had a deep education, but not necessarily a broad education. I'm glad I like what I do because I don't think there is much I could switch to without taking a few years of classes.
And, being successful in college does't necessarily translate to success in a career. It can help yes but taking advantage of where you are and what you are doing plays into it as well.

Nope - Double major speech/drama with an English minor.

I work for a technology firm dealing with the health care industry.

*edit* I like a lot about FB. You can block people there and I've been able to re-connect with people from my home town, some I haven't talked to since the 70's

If I had not gotten the advanced electronics training that the US Navy gave me then I would not be in the job I hold now.

Yes, 100 years ago, it was either be a nurse or a teacher. I don't like needles or blood.
