Volcano--Live 2011

Post by capnbobby »

I finally had a chance to sit down and listen to "Volcano--Live 2011." I recommend this album to Parrotheads if you want a live copy of the "Volcano" album or if you attended any of the dates on the Fin Land Tour. The quality of the recordings is really good, better than the original studio recordings of "Volcano." The albums from the 70s and early 80s need to be remastered. There are some new arrangements of the original songs on "Volcano," for example, the horn arrangement on "Stranded on a Sandbar" and the overall use of steel drums. If you attended any of the dates on the Welcome to Fin Land Tour, these songs should bring back good memories. "Fins" was recorded in Charlotte, "Volcano" was recorded in Kansas City, "Survive" was recorded somewhere in North Carolina, "Boat Drinks" was recorded in West Palm Beach. The other songs were recorded somewhere on the Fin Land Tour; it's not exactly clear where.

I recommend this album highly to Parrotheads.

Ditto for me.

Survive, especially, is just one of many ballads that I simply love.

Found elsewhere on this site:

Fins – Charlotte, 4/21
Volcano – KC, 4/30
Treat Her Like a Lady – West Palm Beach, 4/23
Stranded on a Sandbar – West Palm Beach, 4/23
Chanson Pour les Petits Enfants – Charlotte, 4/21
Survive – Raleigh, 4/19
Lady I Can't Explain – Charlotte, 4/21
Boat Drinks – West Palm Beach, 4/23
Dreamsicle – Pittsburgh, 6/21
Sending the Old Man Home – Charlotte, 4/21

And dammit, it's only downloadable thru iTunes. I'm not a sheeple and don't intend to become one; does anyone know if Mailboat intends to release this as a disc at retail?

Just wondering if JB will release any more new music soon.........????? :o

Even though Volcano-2011 is getting good reviews here, I don't really need any more versions of what I have......

Didn't JB already say he wasn't releasing any new albums (CD's) anymore, just downloadable releases?

It's easy to tell where four of the songs on "Volcano--Live 2011" were recorded because Buffett makes reference to the locations during the songs. "Fins" was recorded in Charlotte, "Volcano" was recorded in Kansas City, "Survive" was recorded somewhere in North Carolina, and "Boat Drinks" was recorded in West Palm Beach. However, I'm not sure it's possible to pin down the exact venues at which the other songs were recorded. "Treat Her Like a Lady" was performed at Virginia Beach, West Palm Beach, and Tampa. "Stranded on a Sandbar" was performed at West Palm Beach and Tampa. "Chanson Pour Les Petits Enfants" was performed in Charlotte and Raleigh. "Lady I Can't Explain" was performed in Charlotte and Raleigh. "Dreamsicle" was performed only once on the tour, in Pittsburgh, so that is definite. "Sending the Old Man Home" was performed in Charlotte and Raleigh. It was also performed at the aviation museum in Pensacola, although I find it highly unlikely that it was recorded there. Here is a revised list of the venues at which "Volcano--Live 2011" was recorded.

"Fins"--Charlotte
"Volcano"--Kansas City
"Treat Her Like a Lady"--Virginia Beach, West Palm Beach, or Tampa
"Stranded on a Sandbar"--Florida (either West Palm or Tampa)
"Chanson Pour Les Petits Enfants"--North Carolina (either Charlotte or Raleigh)
"Survive"--North Carolina (either Charlotte or Raleigh)
"Lady I Can't Explain"--North Carolina (either Charlotte or Raleigh)
"Boat Drinks"--West Palm Beach
"Dreamsicle"--Pittsburgh
"Sending the Old Man Home"--North Carolina (either Charlotte or Raleigh)

Therefore, 9 out of the 10 songs can be pinned down to an exact venue or, at least, a state.

From the USA Today article about the potential release of the Buried Treasure collection:
Meanwhile, he's written some new songs, but says, "I'm at that point now where, do I really want to go into the studio and put out another album? I've got four or five songs new songs. Why don't I just go in and record them and put them up online? I'm not sure people really want to go get a whole album collection because of how iTunes has kind of taken the album away."

Stay tuned, he says. "I'm kind of toying with how you go forward with new material. In the meantime I certainly know how to deal with this old material. They will want that as a collection."
Personally, I hope he never goes the download only route. Maybe someone needs to let him know that vinyl is currently enjoying a significant resurgence and he doesn't have to give in to the digital age so easily. That said, everyone from Jimmy Page (who just launched a new website where he has hinted at making new recordings available via downloads) to R.E.M. are grappling with how to present new music. In fact, that very issue apparently paid a pretty major role in their decision to throw in the towel this past week after 31 years as a band. Their contract with WB will be up following their upcoming greatest hits release and they weren't sure where to go from there as far as how they would handle releasing new music, especially in a musical climate that's changed dramatically over the course of their career.

Volcano is one of my favorite albums. Definitely gonna pick this up (especially since I just listened to Buffett Hotel for the first time and blech).

If re-recording live versions of past albums is a trend, I am SO looking forward to it. :D

Maybe a fun idea but it will only help reinforce the opinions of those that have criticized Buffett for being nothing more than a nostalgia act. I actually didn't mind the majority of Buffet Hotel and hope we haven't heard the last of him as far as new material is concerned. That Buried Treasure collection would also be nice, I just hope it doesn't end up on the backburner as several of his projects have over the years (I'm looking at you, Coastal Confessions DVD).

I'm kind of a one trick pony myself, so I don't really mind. I see why getting the other promised goods, though, would make folks very happy also.

Off to my iPad to do some downloading.

wasnt there supposed to be a live version of the One Particular Harbor album released this year to???? i may be in the minority but i am sick of all the live stuff, most of which is the same tired material.I can see if he did a live album that featured no "yellow album" songs or cover songs but instead was a collection of deep album cuts that spanned his entire catalog. Or even if he changed up the shows and actually featured a specific album in its entirety(this was actually something he said he was going to do a few years back).

As for new material, I always look forward to it and hope its released in a traditional cd format.

JB has referenced doing this several times over the past few years......sometimes he even started, but the "novelty" quickly faded away as the tour went on.

As for new material, I always look forward to it and hope its released in a traditional cd format.
While many bemoan that JB's newer material hasn't been "up to the standard" of his earlier work, I doubt that is unique to him. Nevertheless, like you, I always enjoy the anticipation of some new Buffett tunes!
