Question about the music business......

As a person who loves to listen to music, but never had the talent to play anything, I often was curious how musicians get paid for:
> Album releases? (I realize this is changing with today's digital downloads.....)
> Live appearances in local clubs, bars, etc.?
> Concert appearances in larger venues like stadiums?
> When other artists cover their music?

Can any BNer shed some light on this for me?
