Galveston in January
I'm going on a Road Scholar (Elderhostel) trip January 14-21. Any PHs or PH clubs doing anything around then, there?

Re: Galveston in January
Nope: never been there.
We picked it because it seemed warm for January.
I've been around the gulf coast a bit, to Biloxi, etc., and I liked that.
Our course is called Island Sampler: Birds, Biology, Bays, Beaches, and Buccaneers
(reminds me of some other B stuff
)
And I'm reading a book about the great storm of 1900.

I'm not for sure, but I am going to guess that Artists Boat is going to be part of your trip. They do kayak tours of the bay. You go bird watching and do watercolor paintings. It is a GREAT day on the water.
You have to eat a Gaidos - http://www.gaidosofgalveston.com/ Kind of a classic Galveston spot for seafood.
The Strand is a good place to go to shop. If you have a car, drive up to San Leon and go to Topwater Grill - http://topwatergrill.com/.
The beaches in Galveston are well, ok at best. I haven't been on them since Hurricane Ike. Don't expect to see the same kind of beaches you see on the east side of the Gulf (Florida, Alabama).
That is about all I can help you with. Maybe clearlakeparrothead will see this and give you some more tips.

Re: Galveston in January
We were in Surfside earlier this year just down from Galveston and I was impressed with the beach. I have never been a fan of the Texas beaches but they just seemed improved for some reason. We did the drive from Surfside to Galvestion and there were several beaches that looked nice and clean.........someone told me that after Ike a lot of improvements had been made.
Have a great time and maybe you can give this sorta local some tips on what is fun

Try to get to the Old Quarter ... Wrecks Bell's place and a shrine to Townes Van Zandt. It's a tiny place, but usually has GREAT singer/songwriters ... it's downtown next to the opera house.
Gentilly ... 42 years is a long time to wait .... a Northeast Texas woman can hope.

If you can get over to Surfside, stop at Kitty's Purple Cow. Great burgers and cold beer!
