El Conquistador in Puerto Rico

Post by surfpirate »

Anyone ever stayed in this resort?

El Conquistador Waldorf Astoria - Fajardo, Puerto Rico

We're headed down there the first week of April.

Looking for some resort/area advice.

Old San Juan is a must.

El Yunque Rain Forest definitely and the Bioluminescent Bay.

Other? We'll probably stay on the resort most days
and just rent a car for a couple of day trips.

Restaurants nearby? The resort fare is awful damb expensive.

Oh .... we have two kids ages 15 and 12.

We're overpaying (last minute decision to go ... airfare's killing me),
but I owe the wife and kids
a good trip ...
we haven't done a nice vacation in a few years,
just standard summer
east coast beach trips. ....

So we're gonna spend a bit and just say "WTF?" ....

In Old San Juan we must recommend The Parrot Club restaurant. Here is a link to the corporate web site which lists all of their restaurants in Puerto Rico.

We have a great time at the bar enjoying tapas and frosty beverages. Have fun!

The tram leads to a boat to take you to their private island, which has water sports (and a nude beach).
It's a great resort. You'll have a blast.

(One caution: You'll drive through some "modest" areas to get there, so don't go walking off property at night.)
We'll party just like Bubba does,
We'll do the Old Man proud!

There are a lot of great things to see in PR if you are willing to be adventurous.

Rio Camuy caves - Very well done. Well worth the trip.
If you go to old san Juan, the Barcardi factory is close. I have a hard time spending a day in OSJ. Also El Morro is better than san cristobal if you are touring the forts.
Banos de Coamo - nice parador (resort) golf club, mineral spring, great place to stop for lunch
Panaramic route - Road that winds across the island. nice ride, waterfalls and local stuff - I prefer this to el yunqe
Areceibo - radio telescope I think this could be done same day as the caves.
Parguara - nice boat village also a biolumenscent bay. Good food good people. Try to hook up with a local in a small boat the glass bottom charters are good, but the locals are more fun.
Guanica - Great southern beach
Cabo Roja - far SW beach one of my favorites.
Castillo de Serralles - the Don Q home great tour. It is very close to the cross in Ponce
Ponce - I love walking around the town square. We usually stay at the Hotel Melia
If around Ponce the Tibes indian grounds are nearby. it's good for 3-4 hours.
http://www.sailpuertorico.com/ - since you are near the fajardo yacht club. Look domingo up. He is great. He'll take you to Vieques and offers a great daysail. If you are lucky his girlfriend/wife now maybe will go along and make a puerto rican lunch for you. He used to race in the Rolex cup so he has a lot of great stories.

if you want to eat cheap head into the hills and stop anywhere. I have never had bad food or digestional issues and I've done a lot of things that a sober rational person would never do. :) maybe the alcohol killed the germs. I also think I spelt some of the places wrong. I've been there a few..ok I've lost count times. Wife has many relatives there.
Rub yours on me and I'll rub mine on you
