Fun show tonight, the acoustic medley was awesome, jimmy was having a blast on stage, during Mac's opening verses to 5 o clock, jimmy sat down on the stage with a drink in hand and just looked up at him while he sang. It was priceless. Though the set list had little changes, and I usually complain about that, I had a blast tonight. I won some BBQ sauce at the Margaritaville tent by answering a question about Barnaby records, met some coral reefers, met daaave from bn, and had 6th row orchestra. It was a lot of fun. Plus to make it even better I am having dinner with the surfpirate at the Mac Mcanally show tomorrow!

Yeah, Auntie....it is a bit strange to see the times.
We babysat for my soon to be brother and sister in law for them to go. From what I've heard, I think I'll just keep my memories of 2008-2010. Those were great years.

Re: Who's going to Bristow, VA September 1?
The concert was great! Jimmy was a great performer again. Loved the set list and its order. Really, really fun show!
The tailgate? Was pretty much what I anticipated. Disappointing. For a concert tailgate, it was probably good. But it wasn't the Jimmy Buffett tailgate scene we've all grown to love. I saw only one tiki bar. No beaches. No kiddie pools. No wheels of misfortune and other party games to help make new friends. The police shut down any drinking games on tables (beer pong, etc). And people were told to take down tents. People sat in their spot and ate and drank (plenty of grills and plastic cups to see!), played some cornhole. Even the Margaritaville-sponsored tents were weak. I remember 2008 when they had limbo contests! If there were samples of shrimp and temp tattoos, i must've missed them.
My friends and i went to Tampa in March for our first concert outside of Bristow. THAT was the scene. It felt like my first concert in 2006. I don't know what I'll do next year. I'll prob return again bc of my FOMO, but will keep expectations in check. And will hopefully add another new venue to visit (I hear Pittsburgh knows how to party!) and hopefully return to Tampa again.

So what time did the gates open to let people in the lots? Did they jam all the
cars together or did you have some room? Just wondering.

Re: Who's going to Bristow, VA September 1?
I can't speak much to the tailgating experience. I got there at 6. People were having fun for sure, but it didn't have the vibe of past years. Made my way around the lots and saw Surf Pirate and Daaaave, but that's it. The BN showing was pathetic compared to (most) other years but the place felt crowded enough that it seemed sold out even though I knew it wasn't. The show last night didn't feel as phoned in as the last couple of years and the updated feel of some of the predictable tunes made them feel much less stale to me. The non-standard song choices were more exciting to me than those from recent years. I would say that I personally enjoyed last night more than I have enjoyed a Buffett show in years. After each of the last few shows, I doubted if I really HAD to come back the following year. This year, I think he earned a return appearance from me next year.
Here's a YouTube playlist of a bunch of videos I took from the lawn. Some are kinda shaky since I was zooming way in from so far away. I haven't named the vids yet and one is still uploading, but you can browse. BN's own Daaaave made the video screen for then 2nd year in a row with his custom made Jimmy poster during CILCIA. You can see him in my video of it toward the end of the song. I'll let him tell the story about that.

Re: Who's going to Bristow, VA September 1?
Yep, 3 p.m. My friends and I took a bus and arrived at about 3:30-40. The lots near the entrance were empty. The parked the buses and RVs in Lot D, and it was terrible. So far removed from everyone else. I felt very squished next to other buses and RVs. It seemed like the cars were parked much closer than previous years, but there still seemed to be decent room to have your own personal grilling and chilling space.big john wrote:So what time did the gates open to let people in the lots? It was just ... not the same. My friends and I did one loop around the lots (we had a virgin with us), chatted with a few fun people we had met, saw few things of note, and went back to our own space and stayed until it was time for the concert. And the concert was definitely a good one.
(Anyone have a recording of the local version of Margaritaville that he performed last night? That was such a treat!)
Really wish I didn't already have plans tonight. Would love to eventually get to see Mac perform.

Yeah, I got a video of it from the lawn. I'm sure it'll be on the Jokelben FTP site very soon as well.

What a great show. We actually tailgated at the hotel the entire day with some of our favorite Parrotheads, as well as some new found Parrotheads. Left for the show around 5ish and got right in. The show was, in my opinion, the best I have seen in the fifteen years I have been attending. Hope everyone had a great time like we did.
I made enough money to buy Miami but I p*** it away so fast.

Sorry to sound like a wet blanket. Some of my greatest tailgating memories are from Nissan though.

So glad those who attended enjoyed the concert, but, for me, Nissan/Jiffy Lube will be seen no more........

I agree, as far as Buffett tailgating goes, it was lame, but we had a great time. I got parked next to a REALLY large truck... So the space behind my beetle convertible allowed for a great tailgating space.
My only question... I would have put umbrellas in the same category as tents/canopies...? Apparently not. Note to self... Being umbrella next year. Love the spots on the grass, right outside the fencing, alongside the road.. Afraid beetle would have a problem climbing down the curb at nights end though.

While I do understand where you are coming from, I was just saying that with the way things have turned out, we had a great time. Trust me, I have been to the Merriweather & Nissan shows for many years and witnessed the true meaning of Parrothead tailgating. It was certainly different walking into the venue this year than in years past. In my opinion though I do think this was one of the best set lists I have ever heard, especially with the Tryin' to Reason/Last Mango medley to finish off.

I would have to agree. 2010 was the last great tailgate year at JLL. However I had a blast once Jimmy took the stage, one of the best shows I have seen him do. It also didn't hurt that I was only about 12 feet from Jimmy and the Coral Reefers.

Thanks for the link to the recordings!
1. I can't believe there are a total of 12 pages for this thread. So sad.
2. Next year, assuming Jimmy returns to Virginia, I think I'll look into staying at the hotel nearby and tailgating there and making new Parrotthead friends. The concert is worth seeing, but I really missed the interactions with random new friends and phans. Sounds like the hotel is where I may need to go to do that if the policy isn't lightened up more.

For those who weren't at the concert, you really need to see this. It is priceless, I was sitting a few rows to the left of the group that threw the wig up to Jimmy. This may be my all time favorite concert moment, I still laugh every time I watch this
