media hype over so called "pink slime"

Post by clayp »

"Pink slime" in the news. As a person working in the meat industry, this is very alarming, and I wanted to get some of your thoughts. First of all, "pink slime" is a made up name by one person and it went viral. It is Lean Finely Textured Beef (LFTB), and it is 100% USDA inspected and approved beef, no fillers. In the last few weeks, companies have suspended operations at beef facilities in Texas, Kansas, and Iowa , trucking companies in have shut down, one ground beef company has filed for bankruptcy, box companies are cutting shifts,....the list goes on. All because of misinformation. Please take a couple of minutes to check out our website. beefisbeef.com and please let me know your take on this subject.

Perhaps an odd first post, but our opinion on this should be taken into consideration, because we are cheeseburger experts, are we not?

I suspect most of us have consumed many pounds of "pink slime" over the years. I feel fine. Keep it coming.

I'm not eating anything that's been washed in ammonia, I don't care how much it's "approved" there has been a lot of awful stuff "approved" over the years and not found harmful until much later. Fortunately for me, I live in a rural state where locally grass fed/organic beef, chicken, lamb etc is raised. I buy nothing else. The whole concept of that process is disgusting no matter what it's called. While I'm sure I've ingested some over the years, now that I know about it, I won't be doing it anymore. Just one more reason to never set foot in a fast food place.

I appreciate your input, good and bad. I am reaching out to any forums i can think of to get consumer opinions. we don't sell directly to consumers, so there has never been advertising except to the ground beef companies. They have been happy to buy the highest quality beef for 30 years, but this media campaign is tough to beat. You can probably tell that I am one of 3000 employees that stand to lose their job over false information. Please keep posting your thoughts, any information is helpful.

The whole "pink slime" term puts a mental image in my mind. (not pretty)

Don't know how you can unpaint that picture...

I've been making my own hamburger before this whole "pink slime" thing came out.

I agree; it's a very odd way to introduce oneself to an online forum. Some might even say suspicious. And it reads like an "astroturf" attempt to influence online social media. Just sayin'. :)

I don't trust *any* name that an industry comes up with to describe/sell its own products. And the FDA *has* been bought off a time or three, so "FDA approved" isn't always a guarantee of wholesomeness.

These days, I eat a lot less beef, due to my own health issues. If I were buying "burger meat," I'd go to a place with a meat counter and have them grind it for me. Presto - no "pink slime," or whatever the marketing people are calling it this week.

I feel bad if your company is suffering for something they aren't doing. I feel your pain, I work for a bank - a large regional bank. We took no bailout money, we did no stupid mortgages we have barely any foreclosures but we're taking a hit too because banks in general are now being painted as ALL bad. Best of luck to you.

wPs........... [smilie=puking.gif]

I eat beef and I like it seared.........just knock the wind out of it. So I'm certainly not a vegan.

Don't like fast food......especially Taco Bell....talk about fake beef!
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Pinot Noir in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and screaming "WOO HOO"

I agree. could the guy have logged in from TX, KS, or IA? sure. looked more like a "copy-paste" job. The guy got his nickel, shiny and new, and is off to spam other forums. Besides Beef Products, Inc. (or whatever the company making the slime is named) has a couple well-paid wh0ers in the form of Mittens and the Gov. of Iowa.

Do you live in the Amarillo area?
Do you work for BPI?

If so, I'm sorry about your company and hope you don't lose your job.

I don't think it is the beef products, but the ammonium hydroxide?
