Blackberry Smoke....Southern Rock still lives.
I've just found out about these guys and must say that I am seriously blown away. I thought this genre of music was doomed to only be played on moldy oldies stations but this group has got what it takes. I wasn't relly surprised to see that Zac Brown had signed them for their Southern Ground label.

Re: Blackberry Smoke....Southern Rock still lives.
I love the guitar in southern rock but why can't they (all most southern rock bands) get away from lyrics about whiskey and women and how hard life is?
That's the main reason I never liked country music to begin with, that and the twangy voices.
But they are very good - I still dont' "get" Homemade Wine but I'd go see these guys.

Down here women make life hard and whiskey helps you get over it.

That is kind of, by definition, what makes Southern Rock Southern Rock.....that would be sort of like asking trop rock to get away from lyrics about beaches and palm trees. I love good redneck, hard drinking, bad lovin' music once in awhile....it's not my preferred genre, but some days it just does the trick....and it's usually BBS, Skynrd, Allman Brothers and Marshall Tucker!

Re: Blackberry Smoke....Southern Rock still lives.
Yeah I know, I have this conversation with people about trop rock too, sometimes that wears on me as well. I can only hear so many songs with the same subject matter. The thing I like most about southern rock is the music itself, the guitars rock - sometimes the lyrics not so much. Jessica by the Allman Brothers is one of my all time favorite songs.pbans wrote:ScarletB wrote:I love the guitar in southern rock but why can't they (all most southern rock bands) get away from lyrics about whiskey and women and how hard life is?

Re: Blackberry Smoke....Southern Rock still lives.
i think Southern Rock and Country are different...i think Southern Rock...I think Lynyrd Skynyrd , 38 Special , Outlaws , Molly Hatchet , Blackfoot , Henry Paul Band.....most front men weren't twangy , but very powerful voices......Keith Urban is country and he doesn't sing about Whiskey and women....I wanna Kiss a Girl i guess is about womenScarletB wrote:I love the guitar in southern rock but why can't they (all most southern rock bands) get away from lyrics about whiskey and women and how hard life is?

I think the differences used to be more pronounced than they are now in some cases. I guess I can say I'm not a fan of the entire genre but there are individual bands and even individual songs that I do enjoy.

Re: Blackberry Smoke....Southern Rock still lives.
I have been to see this band 8 times since last spring when they were opening for ZBB. I will see them 3 more times before the summer is over. There are several reasons why I hooked onto this band so quickly. First they are incredibly talented musicians. Secondly, their lyrics are intelligently written. And lastly, they are incredibly personable with their fans. And the last reason is probably the #1 reason I have been to see them so many times. They are on the "cusp" of becoming very very big yet they have the time to chat with their fans on facebook or in person if you see them out somewhere. My boyfriend and I drove to see them at their live DVD filming last summer at the Georgia Theatre in Athens. As we were all waiting in line, the band came through to shake hands and hug all of us fans that came to see them. ( On a side note Jay and I are in the live dvd several times)
Their songs are very southern rock however, they have a few songs that could be classified as straight country. They also have some straight up jam band type of songs. They do remind you a little of the black crowes. Interestingly enough Rich Robinson and his brother Chris name the band Blackberry Smoke and are still good friends to this day. Do not go expecting to see a pretty boy band. They are more about the music than their appearances. All of the band members sport long hair and beards in some fashion or the other and Charlie the lead singer, umm...has very long mutton chops. I am excited to get their new album, as it was recorded in the mountain of NC in an old church. named Whippoorwill ( a song written for Charlie's grandmother who was the catalyst for his music career).
If you even remotely like southern rock - go see this band. They are a rockin' good time and you will not regret it.

Re: Blackberry Smoke....Southern Rock still lives.
i agree the old country music was more twangy..the new Country is more of a Country Rock , some may be considered a Country Pop Rock..like a Taylor Swift...drinking songs yes on most artist , about trucks a lot , women breaking up with then some....but , Buffett has a lot of songs about Drinking.ScarletB wrote:TommyBahama wrote:i think Southern Rock and Country are different...i think Southern Rock...I think Lynyrd Skynyrd , 38 Special , Outlaws , Molly Hatchet , Blackfoot , Henry Paul Band.....most front men weren't twangy , but very powerful voices......Keith Urban is country and he doesn't sing about Whiskey and women....I wanna Kiss a Girl i guess is about womenScarletB wrote:I love the guitar in southern rock but why can't they (all most southern rock bands) get away from lyrics about whiskey and women and how hard life is?

Very good review of BBS, Shannon.
I too have seen them a couple of times open for ZBB. The crowd is always wild about them.
I'll have to check out the song about Charlie's grandmother.

Re: Blackberry Smoke....Southern Rock still lives.
But ZBB isn't straight up country either. They are a little tropical, a little reggae, a little jam as well.
I think the difference between ZBB, BBS and other country bands or performers (like Luke Bryan,Rascal Flatts, etc) is that they are not "one note" and by that I mean one flavor. They also write all of their own music which seems to be an anomaly in any music today.

Re: Blackberry Smoke....Southern Rock still lives.
so that would make Kenny Chesney Tropical and a couple of Allan Jackson Songs could be Tropic.....ZBB to me is Hillbilly Country....one song, i don't think makes him Tropical.....i guess i just don't hear it......again i'm not a fan and has listened to all his songs....i just hear whats played on the radio.....and i don't think it has a trop rock sound.....but, thats me.....i guess with the ski hat on , he does have a reggae look to him.sunseeker wrote:But ZBB isn't straight up country either.
