Tift Merritt's Bramble Rose Turns 10

In commemoration of the 10th anniversary of Bramble Rose, Tift has posted the video below. She's also made a previously unreleased version of her first single "Jukejoint Girl" (which was originally recorded with the Carbines) available at this link. "Jukejoint Girl" b/w "Cowboy" was originally released as a 45 on the Oil Rig Recordings label back in the late 90's. The new, previously unreleased version is apparently an outtake from the Bramble Rose sessions. All these years later I'm still a Tift fan but it's that original sound she had going with the Carbines back in the late 90's and early 00's that I favor. For whatever reason, the true essence of that sound has never accurately been captured on record.

Got it. thanks, Tiki. Just listened to Bramble Rose the other day.

And I think it has been almost 10 years since I saw Tift at Austin City Limits Musicfest.

The last time I saw her was during the Oliver Gant benefit here in Raleigh back in March. It was just her and bassist Jay Brown which was great but there was hardly anyone there. Most likely because everyone was trying to get into King's to see the Avett Brothers (who are a much bigger draw than Tift in these parts these days). More recently she passed through here opening for Nick Lowe. I see she's going to be playing the Greenfield Amphitheatre in Wilmington in September. I may try to catch her again then.

She was perfect on that little rock stage at ACL. My favorite little place to watch music at ACL.

I haven't been to Austin in far too long. Hopefully a return trip will be in the works within the next couple of years. I really like the line up for this years ACL Fest as well.

Just a heads up that Tift is going to be on the Mountain Stage radio program this weekend along with David Lindley. More details here.

There's also this interview with Tift that was recently conducted by Mountain Stage host Larry Groce:
