The Christian? - Barnaby single #ZS7 2013
The time on the 45 lists 3:28. The LP version clocks in at 3:54 - what was edited out? Also, is the 45 mono or stereo?

Do you have a copy of the actual 45? If so, whether it's mono or stereo is usually listed on the label somewhere. As for what was edited out, it may have been for time, not for content. The only way to find out is to play it.ChrisP wrote:The time on the 45 lists 3:28. The LP version clocks in at 3:54 - what was edited out? Also, is the 45 mono or stereo?

I don't have the 45 - looking for someone out here who does and knows about it.

There used to be a Buffett discography page that you could link to via the Church of Buffett website that was very extensive and included lots of 45's but I can't seem to find it now. That would probably be very helpful to you if the site is even still online.ChrisP wrote:I don't have the 45 - looking for someone out here who does and knows about it.Tiki Torches wrote:Do you have a copy of the actual 45? Re: The Christian? - Barnaby single #ZS7 2013
That is likely what is known as a "radio edit" or "promo" 45 which usually means that the instrumental parts are shorter then the album version. As to the mono or stereo question if it is as I suspect a "radio edit" or "promo" then it is likely to be mono since Stereo radio was almost non existent in 1970.ChrisP wrote:The time on the 45 lists 3:28. Thanks - I've been through your site but the info. I seek isn't there.
I'm also familiar with how promos are edited but this could also be an alternate take so I'm looking for someone out here who has the 45 and can verify what I want to know.

I happen to own several alternate takes or versions of some of Jimmy's early Barnaby recordings but an alternate take or version of "The Christian?" is not in the collection I own.ChrisP wrote:Thanks - I've been through your site but the info. I seek isn't there.

As for the "The Christian?" on 45 RPM there are five known 45 RPM's that have this song all of them have the catalog number ZS7-2013. On four of the five the song on the B-side of the 45 is "Richard Frost". However on the fifth 45 the B-side song is "The Captain and The Kid" this 45 was released in Spain. Also one of the four with "Richard Frost" on the B-side was released in Canada.
Just before I started writing this I listened to album cut of "The Christian?" and the lyrics in fact stop at 3:28 while the song continues instrumentally to the 3:54 mark. There is IMHO a good chance that the 3:28 promo release omits the instrumental finish found on the album cut. A very similar thing happened when Jimmy recorded the song "High Cumberland Jubilee" also for Barnaby records. "High Cumberland Jubilee" runs 5:09 on the album of the same title, however the song was recorded at 5:41 in length with an instrumental finish. In order to make it fit on the original LP the song was shortened by fading out the instrumental ending resulting in the 5:09 length.

I don't own any 45's all of my tracks are in mp3 format and my Barnaby alternates include: Captain America (single version), Ace (single version), Bend A Little (short version), Death Valley Lives (alternate version), Livingston's Gone To Texas (alternate version), and High Cumberland Jubilee (full-length).ChrisP wrote:Just before I started writing this I listened to album cut of "The Christian?" and the lyrics in fact stop at 3:28 while the song continues instrumentally to the 3:54 mark.

I'd suggest taking an ad out in Goldmine, the record collector's magazine if you truly want to hunt it down. That and maybe hitting some record conventions if there are any in your area.ChrisP wrote:Anyone have this 45 that can help out?

Interesting info. Thanks for all the details of the different versions.
I'll go look at my versions of The Christian on 45s and listen to them.

The only 45-rpm copy of The Christian I have is the "Radio Station Copy/Not For Sale."
It is the Barnaby Records #ZS7 2013 with Richard Frost on the B side.
It is 3:28 long and does not say stereo or mono.
But, I also have the vinyl Stereo LP of The Christian.
It is 3:36 long.
I played the 45 copy at the same time as the copy from my CD on my ipod. The 45 only has 4 sets of 8 beats for a musical introduction before the vocals start. The CD copy has 8 sets of 8 beats of music before the vocals start.
At the end they both have the same number of beats of music past the last vocal "HEY"...that is 8 sets of 8 beats of music. The CD copy also has 4 sets of 8 counts of silence, thus making it 3:53 on my copy compared to the ACTUAL LP which is 3:36 long. The CD copy appears to be an exact copy of the LP, but the stereo LP does sound better.
The VOCAL parts are EXACTLY the same on all three...the CD, the LP, and the 45 rpm, so I'd say they are all the same version, except the vinly is stereo.

You're welcome. And I got a lot of stepping done measuring those beats and we do pray more as we get older.
Re: The Christian? - Barnaby single #ZS7 2013
I figure the lyrics would be the same as the Album and the "cuts" would be at either the start or end of the song.

On "The Christian" tip, if ever you stumble upon this album from Tompall Glaser (of Wanted: The Outlaws fame) it includes covers of both "The Christian" and "Tin Cup Chalice". I had no idea it even existed until I found it in the racks while working at an AM Country station in eastern NC back in the 80's. Of course I couldn't resist the temptation of playing "The Christian" on the air. I thought it was perfectly fitting considering we played Country in the daytime and Gospel at night. You know, the whole "there's a thin line between Saturday night and Sunday morning" thing.

Side A
Loving Her Was Easier (Than Anything I'll Ever Do Again)
The Christian
Freedom To Stay
Tin Cup Chalice
Life's Little Ups And Downs
Side B
Velvet Wallpaper
She's Sweet, She's Kind And She's Mine
She's Never Been This Gone Before
(Didn't We Have Ourselves) Some Kind Of Summer
Don't Call Me Your Only Sunshine

Apparently it's only available on vinyl. MusicStack.com has a copy for sale for $16.50.conched wrote:I've looked at various times for that album and have never found a good way to buy it.Tiki Torches wrote:On "The Christian" tip, if ever you stumble upon this album from Tompall Glaser (of Wanted: The Outlaws fame) it includes covers of both "The Christian" and "Tin Cup Chalice".
