Comic Con

Post by cajunpirate »

It's the annual meeting of the (nerdy) minds out in San Diego. I joke because I proudly wear both my Parrothead and geeky-ness badges on my sleeves, but no, I've never been to a SDCC.

Websites are filled with new TV shows (Arrow on CW), movies (The Hobbit) and new toys, and it got me back on this crazy idea.

I think Jimmy likes to merchadise himself. There are some toy companies out there that have made some great 6-inch rock star figures, including The Beatles, Elvis, Ozzy, AC/DC, Queen and many, many more. Would love to see one of Jimmy. Guitar, shorts, beach ball and Land Shark accessories. I have hundreds of cds, and they are all piled up and set aside...all except my Buffett collection. Those are in order on their own shelf at the top of the case. A figure would go perfect on that shelf (and one even on my desk at work).

Definately not a mass-merchandise thing, and they wouldn't be found in Wal-Mart and such. Maybe just a Margaritaville-location only type of thing.

Last year my daughter's best friend got married in San Diego. We booked rooms downtown a year before and little did we know it was ComicCon weekend. We were in one of the host hotels and it was a trip. My youngest and I walked around the streets at 11:00 pm and watched all the freaks. I though some people got freaky at Buffett shows but this was a whole new level.

I know you mean 'freaks' in a good way. I've been to one Star Trek convention, and the imagination and talent of some of these people in their costumes, and the ones who sell stuff in booths amaze me. Of course, there were a few nutcases (real strange ones), but trust me: there are nutcases in EVERY group.

And I would LOVE a Jimmy bobble-head !!!

Of course it was in a good way. Most ComicCon freaks are for the lack of a better term "nerdy".

Buffett crowds are a bit more worldly (i.e. not living with their mothers @35 years old).

I suggest the biggest difference between comic nerds and Parrotheads is that Parrotheads get the irony behind Why don't we get drunk, while the comic brigade see it as an instruction manual...

Being one who frequents the 'con' scene (comic con, wizard world, gencon, etc) and being a parrothead, you'd be surprised and how many people are actually just down to earth, 'normal' people there to let loose the way we all let loose at Buffett events. Obviously there are the extremes at both venues, but even the majority of people you see in the reports dressed up as characters and whatnot are just your average school teacher, professional, doctor, etc. The con scene is everyone from 9 to 90 at this point, and I've seen some con parties that would actually put some buffett parties to shame. Interestingly enough, this year I actually saw a couple of people dressed as parrotheads at Wizard World in Philly, and they were awesome!
