Jimmy at Alpine - my thoughts on the show
As a long time fan who has attended over 60 shows since my first in 1982, I wanted to throw out my thoughts on the show this past weekend. First off, I think the band sounds great. Jimmy has certainly gone through several line up changes over the years and I think he currently has a tight group of musicians behind him. However, it seemed like this setlist lacks good pacing. I think the show never really hit its stride. I think one area that Jimmy might alter things is his useless banter with Utley. Not only does Utley fail to enunciate any of his words (I was in the 20th row and I still couldn't make out what he was saying) but the Johnny Carson / Ed McMahon thing does not work for me. If Jimmy wants to talk to someone on stage, I would suggest he talk to Mac. Mac's cynical sense of humor would certainly be an upgrade. It probably couldn't hurt to have Mac get an opportunity to play one of his own tunes during this tour as well. Speaking of other singers on stage, I know I might take some heat for this but I am not a fan of the Nadira songs. It has taken me awhile to stomach her vocals in SOASOAS but I think her song on this tour really brought the energy to a standstill. Not to say that all of her songs are bad - last years' version of Use Me was pretty good but maybe its time for a rest. Lastly, I think 5 O'Clock Somewhere works alot better earlier in the set.

I agree whole heartedly with you on the Nadira thing. I have never been a fan of her's.
I think he needs to drop 5'oclock from the set list entirely. It's Alan's song, and Alan is still touring. Let only Alan play it.
Did you hear the one about me being a punk?
Did you hear the one about me being a drunk?
Did you hear the one about me losing my nerve?
Or how I'm just another f**** sheep in the herd?
Did you hear the one about me giving a s***?
Cause if I ever did I don't remember it.

Sorry, too much 5 O'Clock Somewhere merchandise on the shelves to do that.Nighthawk wrote:Butch11208 wrote: Speaking of other singers on stage, I know I might take some heat for this but I am not a fan of the Nadira songs. I would hate to think he feels some sort of obligation to play the song just because of some merch.tryin' to reason wrote:Sorry, too much 5 O'Clock Somewhere merchandise on the shelves to do that.Nighthawk wrote:Butch11208 wrote: Speaking of other singers on stage, I know I might take some heat for this but I am not a fan of the Nadira songs. Re: Jimmy at Alpine - my thoughts on the show
I think Jimmy has as much right to that song as Alan does. It *WAS*, after all, a duet; Jimmy did actually sing on it; and (to date) it's the only #1 on Jimmy's discography. Consider too that the writers offered the song to Kenny Chesney who passed on it; it was then offered to Jackson who accepted it because he wanted a duet he could do with Jimmy himself. So although I can't say for sure, I don't think Jackson has any problems with Mac and Bubba doing it on tour.Tiki Torches wrote:I would hate to think he feels some sort of obligation to play the song just because of some merch.tryin' to reason wrote:Sorry, too much 5 O'Clock Somewhere merchandise on the shelves to do that.Nighthawk wrote:I agree whole heartedly with you on the Nadira thing. You know what might be fun sometime? Have Jimmy do a video of the song with "Marvin Gardens" doing the Jackson part, with the 'regular' Jimmy coming in where he normally would. It's possible; I mean if they could do a video of Hank Jr. singing with his old man ("Tear In My Beer"), something like this would be child's play.

Re: Jimmy at Alpine - my thoughts on the show
We have a much different opinion of the show than most. It was one of the BEST shows we've been to (17 total) including Gulf Shores in 2010 and Pensacola in 2011. For the first time in a long time, we actually NEEDED this concert and weren't just going through the motions because it was "time to see Jimmy again."
We had to pass on eight shows early on this year because of scheduling conflicts. Not that we would have gone to all of them, but we could have at least hit two or three, all eight were between two and six hours away. For those of you in the Midwest and West Coast, please don't throw spears...
Over the summer, we had a disappointing Phamily Cruise that was YEARS in the making. How can a cruise be disappointing, you ask? It rained every day except one. They re-routed our itinerary so KW was our first stop instead of our last... we were hoping to prime our livers during the week instead of blowing it all out on the first day. And there were a couple of last minute family cancellations (our dimes were lost) that threw off the whole dynamic.
And last but not least, I lost my 75 year old father to lung cancer. It was only 57 days from his first noticeable symptom to his last breath. Not only am I having my own feelings to deal with, but then there are all the other side effects that come with a (relatively) sudden family death. Talk about a roller coaster of emotions.
So when we say we NEEDED Buffett... we mean we NEEDED Buffett.
For us, he is our true escape, our place where we can forget all our troubles, and be our happiest. For us, it isn't about the sound quality, who’s singing what, which songs should/should not be in the set list. It's about surrounding ourselves with as much happiness as we can, even for just one day. We almost got sucked into the pessimistic "same old, same old" concert mentality. But since we didn't have time to follow the set list threads for this tour, Alpine was a brand new show to us. CIP and Margaritaville were a wonderful change from the norm and starting with OPH was as great a start as you can get when you're trying to get back to that One Particular Harbor.
Thank you Jimmy!

Re: Jimmy at Alpine - my thoughts on the show
I was at the Alpine show, and like any other concert, thought it was pretty darn great.
Yes, there's a few songs that I get tired of hearing, but, all in all, I'm glad he played at Alpine, am glad he's still touring, and am glad I get to go.
It's really funny how I'll listen to one of his concerts on Radio Margaritaville, and think to myself "OH, I wish he'd not do that song" (ESPECIALLY "Cheeseburger In Paradise"), but, yet when I'm AT a concert, I really get into every song he does. Sure I wish he'd do some of the rarities I never get to hear ("Somewhere Over China", "Something So Feminine About A Mandolin," "Madamosielle Volez Vous Danser," et. al.), but the whole concert experience is something I never get tired of. REALLY enjoy hanging out with the friends from different areas of the country that I rarely get to see or talk to. I don't say it very often to them, but to hang out with them is REALLY a treat that I savor.
(Jim/Captain P, Janice, Eric, Jolena, JoAnn, Lisa, Vanessa, & Karen, it was a joy seeing you Thursday, Friday, & Saturday, I wish it could happen more often. Thanks to all of you).
