Alex Karras — a man of many hats.  Pro football Hall-of-Famer, sportscaster, and TV and movie actor.  I remember him when he appeared in a charming little made-for-TV movie right after the 1972 Olympics titled "The 500-Pound Jerk".  He played a phenomenally strong backwoods hillbilly-type who was "discovered" and groomed to become a member of the US Olympic weight-lifting team, only to become enamored of a Russian gymnast or ballet dancer (can't remember which) once arriving at the Games.  Featured scenes from the actual '72 Munich Olympics and included Howard Cosell playing a parody of himself.  Not much online about it, but I think it would be well worth a viewing if one were to stumble across it.

But for most people, he will always be the Brahma-bull-riding, horse-punching, dim-witted character from "Blazing Saddles".

The best player to reach the N.F.L. from the University of Iowa. (Sorry, Ed, but you'll have to settle for # 2).

A very remarkable man who loved life, loved his family, and loved his roots. He always knew where he came from.

If our governor doesn't order the state flags to be flown at half staff, I'll be very surprised.

Sail on, Mr. K.
