Cancun for Christmas

We are going to Cancun this Christmas so I wanted to run it by the board to see if people had recommendations. We are staying at the Hyatt Regency Cancun, right in the hotel district. We plan on doing one day trip to Isla Mujeres and maybe one down to Xel-Ha, which also offers a train to Tulum. Any other activities we should look in to or "must eat" restaurants?

Well, one thing I can tell you is that there's no train to Tulum from Xel Ha. Different tour companies book Xel Ha/Tulum combo trips, you do Tulum early and Xel Ha afterwards, but you get there and back and in-between on a bus. There is a little train AT Tulum, just after you arrive, it takes you from the arrival area where there are a few shops to the entrance where you pay to get in. Cost is about $2, so believe it or not, some people don't want to spend the money and walk it. Not that far but it's a hot dusty road so, take the train. It is quite a haul from Cancun down to Tulum too, be prepared.
I was just in Cancun but only for a few nights and at an AI resort so I didn't get out to eat other than to have lunch at Blu Deck in La Isla Mall. GREAT happy hour, 2x1 drinks and they make a killer Don Julio margarita.
Isla is beautiful, rent a golf cart and drive yourself around the island. Best place to park it for beach time is on Playa Norte - great beach there. Some places to eat with great food are CoMoNo on Hildago (the main drag), Olivia, Oscar's Grill, El Varadero (for awesome mojitos) and across from Garrafon de Castilla (which is a decent spot for snorkeling) is The Joint (reggae bar).
Do some research on Isla, places to go, eat, drink, etc. There are numerous web sites, and plenty for Cancun as well. Something you might want to invest in is a MapChick map...they are priceless!
Have fun!

Thanks NJ. We are looking forward to cruising around on Isla in a golf cart. The only place in Cancun we know we want to hit, other than Margaritaville, is the Surfing Burrito. Hoping the water is warm and the beer is cold.

Never heard of the Surfing Burrito. Where is it? Then again, Cancun is a big, places open (and close) with the blink of an eye. Can't know everything (although I try to!)

I think they have multiple locations but I know there is one within walking distance from our hotel. Looks like a Chipotle type place with lots of beer and a party type atmosphere.
I think we've also decided to make a day trip on our own to Isla Mujeres rather than a guided excursion. Take the ferry over, maybe rent a golf cart, do some snorkeling and enjoy the town rather than be rushed by a pre-planned itinerary.

Christmas in Cancun is the best. No white snow but plenty of white sand. I proposed to my wife there on Christmas Eve of '02. She has wanted to go back ever since.
I've stayed at the Hyatt Regency one time. Good enough hotel for me and my friends. Their beach, at least when I was there, was very small. But you could easily walk south to the next hotels beach and have plenty of room.
Hope you have a great time there!
