Re: Sail on Charles Durning
I remember him best in the Burt Reynolds/Dolly Parton movie "Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" as the Governor of Texas who loved to 'do a little sidestep' —
— although he was excellent as the crooked cop in "The Sting".
He did leave a legacy as one of Hollywood's great character actors. Sail on, Charles.

One of his last performances was a character who earned the Medal Of Honor on NCIS. Great in Tootsie, too.

Sail on, sir.
I loved his work but until today I had no idea that he was also a war hero: a Silver Star and three Purple Hearts, being buried at Arlington National Cemetery. Salute!

I loved him on NCIS, in Tootsie, and as the priest on Everybody Lives Raymond.

Very sad.....
LOVED his character "Doc Hopper" in The Muppet Movie
and playing Tommy's crazy dad in "Rescue Me"....the episode when he moved in with his friend with the monkey
can make me laugh just thinking about it.
