JB on vinyl

Post by FinsUp6835 »

So over the years I've collected almost every JB album on vinyl. Mostly because I have album frames and I hang them in my condo in north jersey and the shore house. For Xmas my parents got me a vinyl record player (also plays radio and iPod). I have to say I'm hooked. Maybe it's the vintage look of the record going around, or the authentic sound. Now, for many of my fellow parrotheads this is just a flashback of the past. However, for me it's all new. I am only 27, but have been seeing JB since I was 15. Sometimes three times a year. Anyway, my point is you guys had it made! Vinyl rocks! Happy Friday!

The company is CROSLEY. I will ask my parents where they got it next time they call.

No, not everyone. I am missing the following:

Down To Earth
High Cumberland Jubilee
White Coat
One Particular Harb
Riddles in the sand
Floridays
Off to see the lizard (was this on vinyl?)
I believe everything after that was cd, but I could be very wrong. The ones hanging in my condo for album art are A1A (favorite album), Havana day, coconut tele(fiancé loves the phone booth), and living and dying

Hot water and greatest hits (jimmy on hammock with parrot pose) at the shore house!

I think the Crosely players are neat and nostalgic too. I always think about getting a new turntable with a built in recorder.

Always enjoy the Surfpirates archives and biography of Jimmy stuff.

I recently started a thread in the Related Artists section called Ode To Vinyl that links to an article that was written by Forbes magazine contributor Michele Catalano. I love the entire piece but one of the most moving passages is where she says, "I’m not an audiophile by any means. When I say vinyl is the best form of music, it has nothing to do with how clean or pure the sound is; it’s about my sensory relationship with albums." That sums up exactly how I feel. Throughout the course of my lifetime I've seen a variety of different formats come and go including reel-to-reel, 8-tracks, cassettes, mini-disc, DAT, compact discs, etc. but I keep returning to vinyl and there's a reason for that, a great of which is summed up in that article.

I've been in the market for a turntable upgrade over the past few years myself but I've yet to pull the trigger. It's my understanding that a lot of the models on the market for ripping vinyl to mp3 are great for that purpose but beyond that they leave a lot to be desired when it comes to fidelity. That's why I'll be going for one that serves both purposes with more of an ear towards one that has more to offer in the fidelity department.

Yes, it was, although in my experience it's the hardest one to find on vinyl. Down to Earth is much more expensive, but if you're willing to shell out $100+, it's fairly easy to find a copy. OTSTL is the other way around: cheap when it turns up, but that doesn't happen often.

I think I have a couple Down to Earth's. One was really expensive. The other was in an antique shop in one of the bins.

I have several "spare" LPs, maybe it's time I cleaned out my bin. Most have never been touched by fingers (not Taylor), covers show some wear from their age but no damage. Not sure how to guess their value, checked ebay to see what they're going for.

eBay is not an accurate representation of an album's value as the price can be inflated well beyond it's actual worth by those bidding on it (and sometimes by the seller themselves). For instance, this copy of the recalled version of Lynyrd Skynyrd Street Survivors with the flame cover is currently going for $124.99 on eBay. Yes, copies of it are worth more that are in mint condition and that include the original inserts (as this one does) but it's actual value is around $35. The fact that this one comes with a press book (which I've never seen before) also increases the value. Apparently this particular copy is an advance/promo which would explain why it's a "cutout" as well as the inclusion of the press book.

While I make no claims at being an expert at placing a value on an album's worth, I have spoken with many local and regional collector's/sellers on this very topic, so I do bring that experience to the table. For instance, I know of a local record seller who refuses to sell records on eBay because he wants to be fair to his customers by offering records for sale at their actual worth and not by gouging them as often happens on eBay. I would suggest taking your Buffett collection to a local record store that specializes in selling used albums for a more accurate evaluation of their worth. If not, I can help put you in touch with someone that would be more than willing to help you out. Then again, some people prefer eBay for the very reasons I mentioned before, because they can get much more for albums than they're actually worth. It depends on whether you're in it to take unsuspecting fans for a ride or if you want to give them a fair shake.

Thanks for the input. There are used record stores here, I'll visit them first. I have seen catalogues with values somewhere, I'll see if I can find that also.

I don't know about finding everything you want, but there are lots of vinyl records on amazon.com.

Just now I looked and saw Down To Earth for $75 and $200.

There are several copies of High Cumberland Jubilee.

You can always find me in the antique stores looking through the albums.

Personally I have all but two vinyl LP's my collection, the two I do not have are Down to Earth and Off To See the Lizard. I own everything between those two including the LP's Before the Salt from 1979 and Jimmy Buffett from 1981, those two are both reissues of Jimmy's Barnaby recordings on Vinyl.

For those who are asking about values for Jimmy's vinyl LP's you can go here:

I'd almost forgotten about that 1981 release on Excelsior. The butt ugly artwork just screams "cash-in", which is exactly what it was (same as Before the Salt).

I have started a collection. Guess I need to do an inventory to see what I have. I know I have some duplicates and most are in frames.

That's good advice, but I do wonder if you're going to find an "expert" who has any appreciation for Buffett records and their value. In keeping with the general lack of respect for him you'll find among music snobs, in my experience most sources don't recognize the value of even his rarest records. For example, the Goldmine value guides usually don't even mention JB, even though they list thousands of records with a book value well below $100 in near mint condition. Copies of Down to Earth, "Abandoned on Tuesday" or Havana Daydreamin' with the deleted tracks can easily fetch much more than that in decent condition, but saying so would mean putting Buffett in the company of musicians the critics approve of!
