Hotels already hard to find. What else is going on in town that day?

Maybe not the best situation, but I'm in.

Those familiar with the venue/area...

I'll be coming in from South Bend (hence the SB) and I have a room reserved at the Embassy Suites Lakefront (closest Hilton property with availability).

Tailgating will be in the Soldier Field lot?

Don't forget Taste will "possibly" be going on too. We got a room first thing and the hotel said that weekend has been flagged for months as busy.

The Taste is July 10-14 according to the city website. I'm not sure what is going on either...we got 2 rooms at the Congress. Not my first choice but at least we have rooms. I'll keep checking my other favorites to see if we can slip in with cancelations. We plan on being there and blazing a trail with a new venue!

An unbelievable disappointment.

After years of traveling to Chicago to see Jimmy at a wide variety of venues,(Tinley, Toyota, Wrigley, etc.) we are faced with an unreal challenge of finding a hotel. Most are booked solid, few have rates that make the concert ticket price blush, until you get out by the airport, or into Indiana, and that is one overwhelming travel back and forth without a car, as parking close to impossible, unless you park your car near, well....the airport or Indiana to begin with. We love Chicago, and the city is as close as a "cannot miss" as they come, but wow, what can you do?

We will keep searching, but for now, the venue choice shuts us out, rather than invites us in, as there is no room at the inn(s)

Get your hotels via Priceline, by naming your own price. we never do it any other way....just got a room for 2 nights @ Courtyard by Marriott River North, right in a prime downtown locale, for $90/night.

Can't wait, see ya there!

IF I go, I may get a room in Joliet at the Comfort Inn or Travel Lodge. I've done it before. Makes for an easy getaway when I leave for home the next day. Only problem is parking. Chicago is one city that does NOT make things easy for out-of-towner's, nor does it have any desire to.

I think now would be a good time to ask what the tailgate plans may be for this show. What are the time constraints we'll be working with? Can we camp out all day starting @ 9am and just have a good time w/ our fellow parrotheads in the sun? Or will we have to put together another 2-parter and start somewhere else before they let us in?

I'm going to guess on what might happen:

Tailgating/parking will be in the Soldier Field lots, and they might possibly run shuttles to the venue. It's going to be quite a hike if no shuttles due to the face you have to get to the other side of the harbor.

I'm sure parking prices will be at a preminum, hoping not, but it is downtown.

I've been to the venue a few times, and we parked in the musuem campus garages, and it was $20 or so to park. I have no idea what the reworked design of the venue will be like. Currently hold less than 10K, and they're increasing it to 30K.... again no idea.

Just some thoughts...

And the only times they will be using this "extra" seating is for Phish and for Jimmy

Advice to those planning on going to Northerly Island show

Post by Nighthawk »

Please read this.... Please think twice of where you stay and where you travel to and from. Chicago is not the safe city you think it is. It is actually now the murder capital of the United States. Summertime in Chicago can be very dangerous. It isn't uncommon to have 4 or more murders in a single night.

This is just for the last month or so in Chicago, so please read, and think hard about how you will be traveling.

I don't want to hear about more senseless murders which will make lawmakers think of even more asinine laws when they finally allow us to carry.

Nighthawk,

What you describe above is in the gang ridden neighborhoods of Chicago and most of these murders are gang-on-gang violence or innocents caught in the cross fire in these areas. Downtown is not any more dangerous than any other large city. Hundreds of thousands of people work, shop and play in downtown Chicago every day. Northerly Island is as "downtown" as you get. The most dangerous part of our night will be tackling the roads not the bullets. As for CCW, don't worry we will get it.

If anyone has concerns about where to go or not to go in the city I ask you to PM me. I'll give you my $.02.

So all those shootings at past Taste Of Chicagos don't count?

I wouldn't count them. The Taste attracts a huge number of people including unfortunately some bad apples. These people will not be anywhere near Northerly Island. I agree the violence in this city is unacceptable but as it was mentioned before these are areas most people would not be in anyway. These are all the south and west sides which have always been the rougher parts of town. I've attended Lollapalooza several years in a row and walked back to various hotels in the area without incident. Don't let the media change your mind of this great city. I was San Diego last week, and there were 2 shootings, there was a shooting at a Buffalo Wild Wings in Bolingbrook, IL the other day.
