The Margaritaville Hollywood Beach Resort, which has been in limbo for quite some time, was finally approved this week by the mayor and the city commission of Hollywood, FLA. Construction will begin this summer and is expected to last 27 months.

Test Pilings Going In at Future Site of Margaritaville Hollywood

Please forgive my construction ignorance, but what is a "test piling" exactly? How is it different from "real" pilings?

According to the "South FLA Sun-Sentinel," the city of Hollywood, FLA has officially handed over to the developer the land that, approximately 27 months from now, the Margaritaville Hollywood Beach Resort will stand on. The parking garage on Johnson Street and some parking lots around it have been closed so that construction can begin, costing the city approximately 800 parking spots. According to a source, 600 parking spots will be assigned to the resort when it opens, creating a net loss of 200 parking spaces. The resort is intended to revitalize Hollywood Beach. Losing 200 parking spots probably isn't a very effective revitalization technique.

As of Monday, July 22, the most recent development in the Hollywood Margaritaville Beach Resort is that demolition has begun on the Johnson Street parking garage to clear the way for construction. Hollywoodmargaritaville.com is keeping a blog of the progress. Its most recent update includes a slide show of the garage demolition.

Spent a lot of time at that beach as a kid - parked in that garage every time. Always enjoyed the old time style of that beach, but you can bet I'll be paying a trip to this resort when it opens.

According to hollywoodmargaritaville.com, the Johnson Street garage demolition is almost complete. The only thing still standing is the old stairwell. They hope to begin laying a foundation soon. Here is a link to the photographs:

Got off work early today and dropped by, for the first time, Margaritaville Hollywood Beach Resort. Coming along nicely. 5 or 6 floors have been built, a concrete structure. A lot of construction activity--whistles blowing, hammering, yelling. Beautiful view of the ocean, emerald green water close to shore. Some cool restaurants nearby, for example, an organic brewery. When it opens, this would be a great place to stay to visit Lauderdale and Miami. A day trip to the northern Keys would also be do-able. I'll try to post some photos, which I took, or a link over the next few days. Only negative was the parking, which was a nightmare. Had to park in a garage about a 5-minute walk away.
