I need help wrapping my Head around a conversation

in the Cube yesterday, two co-workers are chatting about him getting a carry permit. (he has two little ones and is ...UH 5'6 and maybe weighs 145) I listen for a while and told her that nice quiet Boise is getting to be bad some nights,
I told her that I had been accosted and followed for several blocks last winter by Homeless people wanting $$ both of them followed me (at a distance where they started the confrontations) for several blocks until I slipped down a side street into the darkness. (where if they are stupid enough to follow me there they get what they get) I advised her this was after a movie and not at .............say 2AM or so. dark about 10-1030 ish. her response? "well you should not be walking around then, you should either stay home and not go or you should park and drive home or take a cab. they have a right to make a dollar however they see fit

now I do give when I can (and see fit) not all the time but I do give some. I do not believe that people who shout at me from 1/2 a block off and threaten should be rewarded. but I cannot get into my Brain anyway shape or form where I (or anyone)
should have to either stay home or drive to an event because other people "have the right to make a Dollar too"

WOW I need some help understanding this principal, this is my Go to bunch for explaining things to me that my thick head
will not allow entry. so if you have any insight or can use little words to make me see her side of this thought process.

please help

thanks

I'm on your side here too, Wayne.  The woman's remark was so far off the wall I'd have tried to get closer to see if I could detect the tell-tale traces of a three-martini lunch.

Freeloaders and panhandlers can ask me for money; I'll tell 'em no. End of conversation; case closed; get away from me and go bother someone else. If they pursue me from there, that's called 'harassment'; out comes the cellphone and I've got 911 on speed dial.

I'm wondering since they apparently have the right to earn a dollar by accosting people on the street if I have the right to tell them to get a job?Image

the first guy was just out of Prison, his terminology was such that you could tell
he was demanding that I stop and give him $$$.

Wayne, I think you know how I feel about something like this.
Emphatically.

No, they don't have a right to make a dollar any way they see fit.
Too many stupid people in this world. Unfortunately they drive, breed and vote.

Getting a carry permit is a bit of a radical reaction to being hassled by some homeless guys. If he was touched or really threatened by them he needs to report it to the police and be prepared to ID them.

I'm not opposed to carry permits but I think it's a big step that takes some real thought. If you carry a gun you have to be prepared to kill someone. Most people don't have that capacity and the gun becomes a liability in a life and death confrontation. Even if you are ready to take that step you must take some serious training and keep it up. Guns aren't evil but they are a responsibility like driving a car or flying a plane. If you want to do it be ready to pay the price.

I don't get your coworkers comment either. Unfortunately, I live in a very entitled State. People get money from the State when they are perfectly capable of working, but yet they consider their monthly hand out from the State as a "Paycheck." I guess your co-worker is OK with people robbing and dealing drugs as perfectly acceptable since they need to make a dollar however they see fit.
