Merriweather and Nissan Pavillion (in Manassas, VA) are owned by the same company. Nissan can accomodate more people, which is why it's probably there and not at Merriweather. I too have heard that Jimmy has had problems with the Management of these places. The rumor is it's because of their nazi policies regarding the parking lots before the show.
I am totally disappointed that he will only be doing one show in the DC area again this year. I'm gonna have to pay unbelievable amounts of cash for tickets again unless I get lucky. And for a Tuesday night show, not Thursday or Saturday. d*mn! It's amazing. For the 1999 shows (2 at Merriweather and 2 at Nissan), he sold out in less than 30 minutes. There is a HUGE Parrothead base in the DC area.

I have been to Chicago for the last 6 years, and I have always had a great time. The sound has improved over the last 3 years. I went to Alpine for the first time last year, and I loved the parking lot, but once I got into the concert, I was not impressed. The sound s***ed and I could not stand the layout of the lawn. We were more thatn half way down in the center, and I could not even see the stage because of the messed up slop. I love that he does 2 shows in Chi-town, we are taking the parrakeets (9 and 5) this year!! I will go to both shows in Chi-town this year and also to Alpine, I will go to party in the lot, and I will put up with anything to see Jimmy play!!

The parking lot policies at Merriweather are not entirely caused by the management of the venue. The crackdown on tailgating started because certain residents of the town of Columbia (where Merriweather is) complained about the drinking and carrying on at the shows. I personally live in Columbia, in fact I live directly across the street from Merriweather and I can say that I enjoy when they have concerts there. That is one of the main reasons I bought my condo. I used to walk over to both shows and loved it. Now the summers just are not the same because of people who complain about the noise and goings on at a venue that was located in Columbia before most people moved here.

Merriweather used to be an amazing parking lot party, better than the over hyped great woods and yes.. I have been there (GW) for more than one show. But the Nazis came in and shut down the MW party, the 99 parking lot was as bad as getting through airport security these days. The cops boarded our bus and essentially threatened that if anyone got off it with a beer in hand they'd bve arrested. That was the last year my friends and I went to MW!! The lawn there was awful anyway, too steep and the acoustics lousy, but the party and show were always great. Luckily Lakewood (now called Hi Fi Buys.. hate these d*mn name changes) has picked up where MW left off and has ran an incredible party the last two summers we had shows there, getting better each year. THe parking lot opened at 8am and the party went till show time. Hopefully now it looks like we'll have a summer show back there it will be even better!! I think the change in venue management was why Jimmy skipped last year. So here's being excited for the best new tailgage venue out there..! With a Saturday show its sure to be a great one!

It doesn't really surprise me all that much that the residents of Columbia were the ones to b**** and moan. No offense, but I've found that too many snotty people live in Colombia ("A Planned Community", or whatever the sign says).
It's sad that a few bad apples had to ruin it for everybody. I include some "fans" in that "few bad apples" statement as well. I've seen some stupid people in the parking lot. Thankfully, a vast majority of us Parrotheads don't act like morons. We just want to have a good time with fellow Parrotheads and listen to Jimmy sing.

No offense taken on the comment about Columbia. I love living here. However, I do agree that there are a number of snotty people. The planned community aspect is getting a bit out of control and when it effects the kind of concerts that Merriweather puts on it really upsets me. I personally feel that if you purchase a home you should check out what is in the surrounding area instead of trying to change things once you move. Merriweather used to get assume acts now they do not get anything worth seeing.

LOL Parrothead CMC... I suppose you're a Wolverine? Well, since the *official* dates are up, looks like us Michiganders get screwed again. Guess that's as good of an excuse as any to head to Atlanta... I'll never go to Chicago for a show again! Hey 4evr, head up to Pine Knob for a show sometime, you'll see why!
Have fun this summer everyone!
