Stagecoach Festival 2014

Post by Tiki Torches »

Now, here's someone with the right idea. Look beyond the headliners for artists such as Hurray for the Riff Raff, Jason Isbell, Michael Nesmith, Shovels & Rope, Spirit Family Reunion, Loretta Lynn, John Prine, Shelby Lynne, etc. If I'm not mistaken, this is put on by the same folks that do Coachella, which would explain the diversity of the lineup. More info here.

I knew that Katey Sagal (Married With Children, Sons of Anarchy) was multi-talented but it wasn't until today that I learned that she used to sing back up for Bob Dylan. Here, her and her band tackle Billie Holiday's "Strange Fruit".

Great line up. Eric Church puts on a hell of a live show. One of the best I have seen live.

The line up for Friday night would make a whole lot more sense if Loretta Lynn was headlining.

I would like to agree, but let's be honest, it would be a mass exodus of people leaving after Eric Church's set if he came on before Loretta Lynn. An 81 year old country legend is not who a promoter is going to allow headline a night that also includes Eric Church, Brantley Gilbert, and Easton Corbin, three of the hottest acts in "country" music today. In a scenario where legends trumps today's chart toppers, yes I agree Loretta Lynn should be the headliner. History will remember more what she did for country music then the three names combined.

I wouldn't speak of her in the past tense when Van Lear Rose also did a lot for country music. I can't think of a current performer that would work with Jack White other than Wanda Jackson (who worked with him on her last record) but she's just as much rockabilly and rock as she is country. I also don't think Loretta would be any more out of place in the headline slot these days than Johnny Cash or George Jones if they were still alive.

I'm glad to see the Coachella folks pairing up artists from the alt.country world with artists from mainstream country but to be honest, I'd have zero interest in seeing any of those headliners. Hopefully, the folks that showed up to see the lesser known artist them would walk away with deeper understanding that there's more to current country music than the artists that are currently topping the charts. That would surely do a whole lot more to bridge the gap than any of the feuding that's been going on in the music press over the course of the past year.

Van Lear Rose was a great album, arguably the best album released in 2004. With that being said, it was released almost 10 years ago now, not exactly a new album. Again I agree she should be the headliner, but these festivals are about making money and Eric Church is going to draw more attention then Loretta Lynn these days. I guarantee my music collection and taste mirrors yours in a lot of way, but Loretta Lynn is no longer a headliner at a festival. Johnny Cash in the last years of his career is a whole other story. The man with thanks to Rick Rubin had an incredible string of albums released of new material late in his career. With that being said that's a whole other topic for another day, plus I'm sure your already aware of Johnny's career late in his life. Have a good rest of the day.

Van Lear Rose may be ten years old but it doesn't lessen Loretta's status as a country music legend one iota. Folks like Eric Church may be hot right now but that doesn't mean he's deserving of headliner status over someone that's done as much for country music as Loretta Lynn. Not by a longshot.

I'd love to see John Conlee, Loretta Lynn, Shovels & Rope, I See Hawks in L.A., & John Prine. That's all that interests me. Looks like Sunday's line-up is full of "bro-country"...which sickens me. It's hard to believe what country has become these days....

On the upside, the artists that make up the bulk of the line up (headliners excluded) on all three nights are representative of the best that country and roots music have to offer beyond the mainstream. Again, I have to credit that to the organizers, the same folks that are behind the Coachella festival.
