Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame 2014 Nominations

Post by Tiki Torches »

I'm curious to see if Kiss gets snubbed by the Hall as Sabbath and Skynyrd were continuously before they were finally inducted. Considering how much of a stink Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons have raised in recent years over Kiss not being nominated, I wouldn't be surprised. On the bright side I'm glad to see that Yes and Deep Purple are finally being nominated even though they should have been inducted years ago. In addition to those already mentioned, other nominees are the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Chic, Peter Gabriel, LL Cool J, N.W.A., Link Wray, the Meters, the Replacements, Linda Ronstadt, Cat Stevens and the Zombies. I'm tickled to see Linda Ronstadt up for a nomination as well but one has to wonder if she'd be under consideration if not for her health woes this past year. I hate to think that way but going by past experience it's how the Hall operates. It's also very good to see the Replacements up for a nomination, especially after they were raked over the coals here not long ago by Bicycle Bill who referred to them as an "alcohol-sodden ex-garage band" as though that was supposed to be taken as an insult. Along with R.E.M., U2 and the Cure, they pretty much knocked down the doors in the 80's for what eventually became known as alternative music.

I never thought I'd see this happen in my lifetime. Then again, they did do a 17 page feature on Rush a few years back so I guess anything's possible. I'm guessing this has everything to do with them finally being inducted into the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame.

Still haven't watched all I'd like to but there is fan shot footage of a great deal of this (if not all of it) on YouTube. Very cool to see Kiss getting along (even if it was just for the cameras), Peter Criss and Ace Frehley getting the loudest applause when introduced during Tom Morello's induction speech and Courtney Love and Dave Grohl hugging. If only Kiss and the Hall had been able to work out a way for them to perform that made all parties happy.

This year's ceremony featured a touching tribute from Bruce Springsteen to the E Street Band, a great induction speech by Tom Morello for Kiss, but the show-stopper was Carrie Underwood, Emmylou Harris, Bonnie Raitt, Sheryl Crow and Stevie Nicks all sharing the stage while paying homage to Linda Ronstadt. Couldn't find a video link to do it justice, but HBO is replaying the show several times this week on its various channels.

I no longer have cable so I won't be seeing any of this but the entire Nirvana segment including Michael Stipe inducting them as well as their acceptance speeches and subsequent performances are all on YouTube (at least for now). I have seen some of the other segments, including Morello inducting Kiss and was quite moved by it. I'm not the Kiss fan now that I was at age 14 but I was glad to see them inducted and think they deserve the honor beyond a shadow of a doubt.
