I've actually enjoyed the setlists. My only complaint is that I finally get to hear Landfall live (at Alpine) ... and he changes all the words.

Other than that, I've enjoyed the sets live and on RM.

This is a fansite. 1% of 1% of the people who attend Buffett concerts post here. Of course we are aficionados and want to hear a more varied selection of his catalogue of songs. But there is a reason why McDonalds is so successful, people know what they are going to get. A Buffett concert is the same way.

I think, for most of us here, Buffett shows are more about meeting up with friends and people watch than the music. Well, at least for me it is. And it's usually the only day that I hang out at the beach.

I saw Bob Dylan in concert earlier this year for the first (and only) time. I'm not a huge Dylan fan- have several CD's, know dozens of songs, etc. The concert was a bore. I knew 3 of the songs he played. It's not a perfect comparison because I think we'd all agree that Jimmy's showmanship/shameless entertainment would still make it a great show. But I'd never see Dylan again because of the set list issue.

I'm endeared by artists such as Dylan, Pearl Jam, the Grateful Dead (R.I.P.), Drive-By Truckers, etc. who deviate from the norm and defy audience (and oftentimes their own) expectations by keeping their setlists mixed up. I'm bored by artists who strictly adhere to a template and never dare to deviate from it. Or perhaps even worse, artists who perform songs live that are note for note renditions of the studio versions. Thankfully, Buffett's never really been guilty of that.

funny you call them the big 6. we refer to them as the not so great 8. Or time to hit the restroom. I get he has to cater to the masses to sell tix, but I'd love to see him add in some smaller venues and play the more obscure. I'd pay the higher price for that.

I'd counter that argument by saying with all the cover tunes he's added to the setlist over the last few years, it isn't really a "Buffett Concert" now. If I wanted to hear a Zac Brown song, I'd go to a Zac Brown concert. If I wanted to hear an Alan Jackson song, I'd go to an Alan Jackson concert. If I wanted to hear a Van Morrison song, I'd go to a Van Morrison concert. And on and on ...

When Springsteen played Shea Stadium, I think it was about 10 years ago, he brought Dylan out to sing one song with him during the encore. To this day, if my life depended on it, I couldn't tell you what song it was.

That's funny. He was about a full minute into my favorite song, Tangled Up in Blue, before I even recognized it.

On the Dylan tip, when I saw him in concert for the first time (mid-90's with Santana), he was halfway through "Lay Lady Lay" before I recognized the song. However, if you are in the least bit knowledgeable about what to expect from a Dylan concert going in, that shouldn't come as any surprise. The last two times I saw him (once with Paul Simon, the second in support of Love & Theft in 2002) he stayed closer to the original arrangements of his songs. It also didn't hurt that his band (which included Charlie Sexton) was sh*t hot at the time. That said, like Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits, Neil Young, etc., Dylan's definitely not for everybody and that's not just from a live standpoint, he pretty much does what he wants and really doesn't care what people think. In a previous post, someone compared the live Buffett experience to eating at McDonald's. Unfortunately, that's all too true.

I've been attending concerts since I was 13 years old and consider my track record to be pretty good when it comes to the bad ones. Just off the top of my head I can think of the Raisin Band, who were a last minute fill-in as an opener for Kiss at Dorton Arena in Raleigh in '76. The Climax Blues Band was originally scheduled to open but had to cancel in the eleventh hour. The Raisin Band (who actually dressed as raisins) were pulled from a local club gig by the promoters. I thought they were going to get booed off the stage. For years, I thought they were bad on purpose just to make Kiss look good. It wasn't until just recently that I found out the story behind their appearance. The only other show that comes immediately to mind that's notable just for how bad it was is the Spin Doctors who were part of the HORDE tour back in the early to mid-90's. One would have had to have consumed mass quantities of illegal substances to make them sound good.

I would love a smaller acoustic set in a cozy venue, as I am partial to the ballads anyway - his voice is, for this listener, a better fit for those, and the rarities fit better there. That said, I do enjoy the big shows with the CRB, the tailgates, etc. Ideally, he would do a mix of both types of shows. I would buy tickets to both.

Did you see any of the the Beach Boys 50'th anniversary shows, or any of the Brian Wilson solo shows? Near perfect studio sounding renditions of the songs. It's great because there aren't performed like they are off to the races even when they usually played around a 50 song set list in 2012! Pretty good since I think it was 3 major members of the BB's turned 70 during that tour.

I guess I'm just not as picky as a lot of you are. I go to maybe two shows a year. I hit Chris Izaak (hell of a show) at a local casino and Buffett. It would be cool to see Buffett like I see Izaak up close in a relatively small venue but he isn't going to do that in all probability so I just go and enjoy what I get.

Attitude is a big part of how much you get from anything.

I don't think it's "picky" to expect Buffett to actually follow through on an announcement he made to do an all request show in Hawaii or for fans to speak out regarding their displeasure with an unadventurous/uninspired setlist that is often rife with cover material. If the all request concert doesn't actually occur, it will be another project in a long line of them that he's never delivered on like the Coastal Confessions DVD, playing some of his albums in their entirety and most recently, the rarities collection Buried Treasure. Fans that like every single thing an artist does aren't actually fans, those folks are sheep.
