Sub par 2013 setlist?

Am I the only one who feels as tho Jimmy pretty much mailed the setlist in this year?

Only got to attend the October Vegas concert, but after looking at the setlists this year and hearing what was played at the one I attended, and I was severly dissapointed.

Songs I could go without ever hearing again (which of course, means they're always played):

Margaritaville, Brown Eyed Girl, Fins, Too Drunk to Karaoke, Knee Deep, 5 oclock somewhere, just to name a few off the top of my head.

Suggestion Jimmy! How about a B-sides tour? Nothing after Far Side of the World, and nothing close to the "Big 6".

He's got that show coming up in Hawaii where he's going to play an entire setlist comprised of songs picked by his fans. Judging from the response I've seen on FB, some of those include "Margaritaville", "Cheeseburger", "Fins", etc. Why anyone that's a fan of Buffett that has a rare opportunity to hear deep cuts would choose any of those tunes is beyond me. Hopefully, he and the Reefers will overlook those and focus on the truly rare songs. I realize it will require putting in some extra rehearsal time but since bands like Pearl Jam pull that sort of thing off on a nightly basis, I surely hope Buffett and crew will be up to the task. If the staples end up as part of the setlist, it's going to leave a lot of folks scratching their heads.

I had a great time in Denver. Did I love everything that he played? Nah. Did I thoroughly enjoy myself? You bet. :)

Thing is, Tiki, some of the people who are Buffett fans today are probably people who had never heard of Jimmy before he released "Five O'Clock Somewhere".  They most likely couldn't name another Buffett song other than "Margaritaville" even if you held a gun to their head.  But they are still fans, their money is just as green as yours or mine, and they get a vote, and so that is why the "Yellow Album" songs will probably turn up on that Hawaii setlist.

In fact, back in May this year while being interviewed on KLBJ radio in Austin, Bubba humorously remarked that they have to "play the ten that everyone wants, or else we'll get killed".  So fans like you and I had better resign ourselves to the fact that until the day comes when Jimmy finds that One Particular Harbor and "...finally disappears" (and doesn't holler "BUT NOT YET!"), "Margaritaville", "Fins", "Volcano", and the rest of the "Eternal Eight" are going to keep turning up in the setlists.

The way I look at it, a show like this isn't aimed at the fans that only know the hits, it's for the ones that are always hoping Buffett will dig deep into the ol' treasure chest for the less played and maybe even never played tracks. Hopefully he doesn't take the easy way out by playing the same ol' sh*t folks can hear at every concert.

This is a fansite. 1% of 1% of the people who attend Buffett concerts post here. Of course we are aficionados and want to hear a more varied selection of his catalogue of songs. But there is a reason why McDonalds is so successful, people know what they are going to get. A Buffett concert is the same way.

Ain't that the sad truth. Which is a major reason why I spend my concert dollars elsewhere.

Don't think he packed in the set list. He played what 90 percent of the crowd wanted to hear. I thought he was full of energy and was enjoying himself at the last Vegas concert. Great friends, lots of beers, terrific pool party and Jimmy, thought the whole weekend was fantastic. A strictly b-side concert would most likely be an acoustical show. Mainly because there would be so few people at his concert he wouldn't need an amp to plug in to. Would I like it, yes... but other than people on this forum, most wouldn't.

I think you would be surprised and Buffett would be too. I also don't think a concert comprised largely of rarities would necessarily warrant it being acoustic. Would an intimate, stripped down show be nice? Most certainly but if this all request show in Hawaii turns out to be largely deep cuts and rarely played tracks rather than the same ol' same ol', there's no reason whatsoever why it wouldn't go over just as well with the full Coral Reefer Band.

By no means will I ever quit attending his concerts (21 to be exact), but for someone who compares his fans to Dead Heads, you'd think he'd maybe be able to go a bit off the script, as almost every Dead setlist was a bit different.

Is it cheating if I just attend the tailgates and resign to the parking lot for the show? :)

Every Grateful Dead setlist was completely different though it's believed that someone has unearthed two that are very similar. That's pretty remarkable for a band that toured for many years as they did. With the very notable exception of the upcoming all request show in Hawaii, Buffett has never bothered to put forth that sort of effort and prefers to coast instead. Even promises to perform complete albums never materialized.

All valid points by all.

Maybe if we want some change we can all start tweeting ( I don't have twitter but) the Margarillas. They seem to respond to a lot of people.

Isn't the first half the Hawaii show now the entire songs from st. Somewhere album and the second half "requests"

Yes.
And WHY anyone would request such crap as Cheeseburger In Paradise, Fins, etc., is a mystery to me.

Hadn't heard any updates, for some reason I was thinking Buffett was going to narrow it down to 27 selections from requests made by fans. I'm not surprised in the least that he's since had a change of heart. It'll be interesting to see if he actually makes good on playing Songs From St. Somewhere all the way through as well as playing songs that aren't normally part of the setlist for the request portion.

That is simple.

It is because that is what the vast majority of his fans want to hear.

Why does he play them over and over?

Because it brings in the crowds. They pay good money to hear exactly those songs.

Pretty simple business decision for him to follow that path i would have thought.

But then a gain when I grow up I want to be an evil capitalist.

Apparently, what amounts to a very rare opportunity to hear something other than the standards is lost on some folks. When this concert was first announced, that's what I understood the intent to be, a rare chance to hear songs that are rarely, if ever, performed. If that's truly Buffett's intent (which I believe it to be), I hope he will follow through with it as it'll be him and the Reefers that ultimately choose what appears on the setlist. I would also imagine that he would love the opportunity to perform songs that he hasn't done in years or that have never been performed live. If that amounts to a setlist comprised of "Cheeseburger", "Margaritaville", "Brown Eyed Girl", "Southern Cross", etc. then I would have to wonder what the point of even making it all request show would be when folks can hear those songs played every single night of a tour.

I think I recall him saying something like " we are going to play with this concept more" when he heard about funkys nautical wheelers request. And he played it. I think Jimmy likes the idea and will respond to it.

I mean 97% of people sat during Landfall this year and were up during all the hits. Mass majority wins.

Let's hope mass majority eats it in Hawaii

I wish you were wrong, but, of course, you're exactly right.
And I continue to go to McDonald's. And Buffett concerts.

I remember hearing on Rad Marg where he did “El Stumpo El Band-o” and invited folks onstage to name a song that he wrote and see if he could do it. he has a lot of stuff for sure.

What would be my choice for a request or El Stump-o? Here we Are. Saw the video plenty, heard it a lot, never heard nor saw a live version.
