a little late getting this out here on BN:
Tuesday night I got a call from the folks. not unusual, but it was two in about 5 min, and a voicemail. My uncle Walter had passed away that morning doing something he loved: clearing snow out of the driveway from the most recent 18" snow dump up there.
He was 85, and 11 days. He was the rock that anchored the family, ironically the middle kid of 8. The older kids left and went out into the world; when my grandfather died in 1950, Walter stayed back and took care of my grandmother, his younger brothers, and the farm. If he wasn't tinkering in the shop and restoring old tractors, he was in the field or in the woodshop when it got too cold in the winter.
my first memories of him are of his laugh filling "the old house", and Christmases with everyone gathered around in both the old and "the New" ones. one of his jokes was, "man is carrying a 12' rod on the street in town, and gets stopped by a little old lady. 'Are you a pole vaulter?', she asks. 'no", says the man, "I'm Norske, but how did you know my name vas Valter?"
please keep my folks in your thoughts. Wally was my dad's closest living brother, and it's going to be a hard few days ahead, and weeks as well.
Thanks.
Last night was the viewing, and this morning was the service. For those of you who saw this on FB, I apologize for the extra bandwidth.

I never know what to say at these times.
Except, think of the good times and smile at those - I am sure someone like you have described would want you to do just that.

Deepest condolences, Todd.
I'm very sorry for your loss.
Sadly, that generation is leaving us all too fast.

No man is an island,
Entire of itself,
Every man is a piece of the continent,
A part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less.
As well as if a promontory were.
As well as if a manor of thy friend's
Or of thine own were:
Any man's death diminishes me,
Because I am involved in mankind,
And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls;
It tolls for thee.
....................................John Donne
I share your pain, RR.
