Royal Caribbean and Margaritaville
Hello pholks.. Been absent a while.. I do have a question.. My wife and I are going on The Oasis of the Seas next year. We have been hearing many rumors that Royal Caribbean is putting a Margaritaville on both the Oasis and Allure.. Anyone heard of this? This would bring a whole new meaning to "Boat Drinks" if true.
Thanks
Dan

Re: Royal Caribbean and Margaritaville
Don't know. While I can understand why this might be exciting news for some, this would be one more example, for me, of the commercialization of "Margaritaville" and the cheapening of the song. There are some artists who resist compromising their artistic integrity for money, J.D. Salinger, for one. Unfortunately, in the latter part of his career, Buffett has failed miserably at that. I preferred "Margaritaville" when it was a state of mind. I don't care for it as a mediocre restaurant at an airport or on a cruise ship.lostshakerofsalt66 wrote:Hello pholks.. Been absent a while.. Re: Royal Caribbean and Margaritaville
R.E.M. and Neil Young are a couple others. R.E.M. were offered millions to use one of their songs in Bill Gates' Microsoft campaign in 1995. They turned it down but the Stones (who've allowed their songs to be used in commercials as far back as the 60's) were only too happy to allow Microsoft to use "Start Me Up". Thing is, in this day and age when it's next to impossible for new artists to get airplay, some (like Alabama Shakes) have allowed their songs to be used in commercials just for the widespread exposure it lends them. In that regard, I've changed my stance on it somewhat but I still have the utmost respect for artists such as R.E.M. and Neil who have never allowed their songs to be used in commercials.capnbobby wrote:There are some artists who resist compromising their artistic integrity for money, J.D. You seem to be making the argument that because materialism is a large part of American culture, it is acceptable; in other words, because Target sells Hendrix and Dead T-shirts, it is justifiable for Buffett to slap a patented brand name on every commodity he can get his hands on. It isn't. Greed in American culture is worthy of criticism. The old saying that he who dies with the most toys wins is (A) false and (B) contributory to the crisis of values in American culture. The commercialization of Christmas is worthy of criticism because it detracts from what is important about the holiday. The fact that it is the beginning of July and I've already seen a back to school commercial is worthy of criticism because it detracts from summer break. Like it or not, Jimmy Buffett is the Ronald McDonald of pop music. He has commercialized his art more than any other musician I can think of, and it saddens me. When he opens Margaritaville restaurants on cruise ships and at airports, it detracts from the song, arguably one of the great songs of the twentieth century. When he slaps one of his patented trademarks on every commodity that he can, it detracts from his integrity as an artist and as a person. (A few years ago, Buffett entered into an agreement with Stephen Ross to name the Miami Dolphins stadium Landshark Stadium. Buffett told Ross that he--Buffett--had a conflict of interest because he is a Saints fan. Ross said that he didn't have a problem with that. I wish Buffett had said, "Yes, but I do." As a Miami Dolphins fan, I felt very ripped off when I found this out.) When Buffett patents the name Coral Reefer so that he can slap it on humidors and cigar boxes he is detracting from the name and integrity of his band. The extent to which Buffett has commercialized his art has, in my opinion, detracted from the art that, in the 70s and 80s, drew many of us to him. It's an example of greed, and greed is worthy of criticism.

Re: Royal Caribbean and Margaritaville
While I disagree about "Margaritaville" being one of the greatest songs of the 20th century (I love it but I don't rank it that high), I do agree with your observations. The commercialization of all things Buffett is indeed sad to see. By all means, please keep on speaking your mind and don't be discouraged by those that are ok with it. They will ridicule you, chastise you and even make attempts to have you banned from the site if necessary, all because you've dared to speak up.capnbobby wrote:lime rickie wrote:Tourists walking "in" the Beatles cover

Re: Royal Caribbean and Margaritaville
I have never been on a cruise nor set foot in a Margaritaville. I just look at it as two businesses decided that their customer bases may overlap so they are apparently entering into some partnership. It bothers some folks and doesn't bother others.
No one ridiculed Cap'n or chastised him or attempted to have him banned from the site. Where do you come up with these dire predictions?

Maybe you missed the responses to his posts in this thread. As for the "dire predictions", I'm just sharing my own personal experience on this site for having dared to speak up in the past. Some others have also voiced very similar opinions yet they haven't been subject to the same response.lime rickie wrote:No one ridiculed Cap'n or chastised him or attempted to have him banned from the site. Re: Royal Caribbean and Margaritaville
I haven't seen that. Most people seem open to fair discussion and criticism of Jimmy, his music, the show experience, set list, etc. You seem to get more attention about it because you don't limit your comments to criticism of Jimmy...you actively disparage other commenters and fans.Tiki Torches wrote:Maybe you missed the responses to his posts in this thread. Perhaps you have blinders on and/or have actively made a decision to ignore the responses to capn bobby's post in this and other threads where he and others have posted similar comments. As for "actively" disparaging other "commenters and fans", I have spoken out against others but only when they've taken me to task for daring to voice my own opinion. Some have assigned infallible status to Buffett's music and business interests. I'm not one of them.lime rickie wrote:I haven't seen that. Re: Royal Caribbean and Margaritaville
I don't have blinders on, just an observation. Like I said, I've simply not seen that on this board. I see, and have participated in, threads about too many covers or songs we don't need to hear anymore, merchandising (Margaritaville Depends, coming soon!) and the like. Plenty of healthy debate and discussion...when it is confined to Jimmy. Have never seen anyone claim Jimmy's music and business are above criticism.

Maybe that will make it into the return of the BN Critters comic strip, the level of humor is just lame enough to fit in perfectly.jbfinscj wrote:Would somebody please answer my question, is jimmy retiring to shoot commercials on cruise ships or not.

It is, I assure you, the BN Critters are much funnier. My level of humor is way more lame then that.
