It was 20 years ago this year, Pink Floyd began to disappear. But now it seems the classic British band is about to materialize again.
Polly Samson, the wife of the band's lead singer-guitarist David Gilmour, has announced via Twitter that a Pink Floyd album called “The Endless River” will be released come October. But Samson says it’s “based on 1994 sessions,” which would seem to indicate these will be old tracks goosed with new overdubs. Pink Floyd released what seemed to be its final album, “The Division Bell,” in April 1994 (an album that just received the deluxe reissue treatment).
Samson said the music represents the “swan song” of keyboardist Rick Wright, who died of cancer in 2008 at age 65. But that’s incorrect if by “swan song” one means the last music Wright made, as opposed to the last recording released that featured playing by a given musician.

As long as the remaining band members are in, as well as the backup singers (which does sound like that is the case), I am all in! I thoroughly enjoy the Division Bell, not such a big fan of Gilmour's last solo release. I am really looking forward to more news about the release.

Some more details surfaced today, mainly that Roger Waters won't be involved (no surprise) and that it's mostly an instrumental/ambient type record.tigzoe wrote:As long as the remaining band members are in, as well as the backup singers (which does sound like that is the case), I am all in! I am not at all excited about a new Pink Floyd album. I am and was a big fan, but don't really care....

Which perhaps says more about you than it does the new album as it seems lots of folks are clamoring for it, at least judging by the response to this news online. That said, it does seem to be a bit of afterthought since the sessions it's being built around are 20 years old and were originally intended for an entirely different project (The Big Spliff). It would also seem it's also a bit of an homage to the late Rick Wright and is a way of honoring his memory. On the other hand, I've also seen some fans dismiss it outright without having heard any of the tracks that have had vocals added to them.rich_big wrote:I am not at all excited about a new Pink Floyd album. Since you're a big fan, I'm guessing you've heard this track from The Big Spliff sessions that was played during Floyd's last tour in 1994 that this new album is being built around.
